UKIP's Roger Helmer has also been talking about his decision to stand down as an East Midlands MEP.
He said: "I think at the age of 73 I'm perfectly entitled to retire. I first mooted the idea back in 2011. This week was the right time to make the announcement.
"Although I announced it this week, I actually signed the papers on 31 May.
"What I'm planning to do, frankly, is serious retirement. I certainly have no plans for a second career and I shall not be applying for any jobs."
It comes amid a row over his expenses.
