    UKIP's Roger Helmer has also been talking about his decision to stand down as an East Midlands MEP.

    He said: "I think at the age of 73 I'm perfectly entitled to retire. I first mooted the idea back in 2011. This week was the right time to make the announcement.

    "Although I announced it this week, I actually signed the papers on 31 May.

    "What I'm planning to do, frankly, is serious retirement. I certainly have no plans for a second career and I shall not be applying for any jobs."

    It comes amid a row over his expenses.

    Retiring East Midlands UKIP MEP Roger Helmer has dismissed a newspaper report, external suggesting he's being ordered to repay up to £100,000 for allegedly misusing EU funds.

    The Guardian claims Mr Helmer - who announced yesterday he will stand down at the end of July - improperly employed a full time UKIP party worker as an assistant.

    Roger Helmer said: "None of that is correct. Questions were raised about two of my UK employees back in February.

    "I produced extensive dossiers in respect of both of them with solid evidence of the work they'd done - phone calls, emails, reports - and I've been waiting ever since for the [European] Parliament to respond."

    Rutland County Council has put two options on the table - one of which would make it a one-way road for traffic.

    The street is only just getting back to normal after recent major works on nearby power supplies.

    There are also some water mains work due to start in the area in the autumn.

    The public consultation on the works runs until 7 July and is available online, external or at several events over the coming weeks.

  4. Fire causes severe damage to two houses in Bilsthorpepublished at 08:13 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

    One house has been destroyed and a second badly damaged after a large fire in Bilsthorpe.

    At one stage more than 30 firefighters were dealing with the blaze on Highfield Drive.

    It started at about 17:30 yesterday evening in a van, which then spread to the houses and a motorhome, Nottinghamshire fire service said.

    An eyewitness told BBC Radio Nottingham the fire took hold quickly, and one of the families are away on holiday.
