Leicester and Hollywood don't always go together in people's minds, but one of Tinseltown's most storied actors will be lending a hand to pay tribute to one of the city's favourite sons.

Alec Baldwin has recorded a special message for Yours Faithfully, Edna Welthorpe (Mrs), an event celebrating the spoof letters written by playwright Joe Orton under a pseudonym.

He's also written a letter in the style of Edna Welthorpe, which will be read at the event on 9 August, the 50th anniversary of Orton's murder.

Dr Emma Parker, from the University of Leicester, said Baldwin - who made his Broadway debut in Orton's play Loot in 1986 - has always had a passion for the Leicester-born writer's work.

    BBC Local Live

The Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham is celebrating its 40 birthday today.

It took a decade of planning and construction but on 28 July 1977 it was officially opened by the Queen.

The hospital's medical school was the first to be established outside of London in the 20th Century.

In 2012, the hospital established its Major Trauma Centre.

Archivist Paul Swift from the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust said the planning of the QMC caused some controversy.

    Archivist Paul Swift

He said: "There was a terrific campaign against it, for example the West block entrance, because it was all compulsory purchase, because two houses had to be demolished.

"The gardens around the existing houses had to be reduced and, believe it or not - this is hilarious just thinking about it - but the residents of Wollaton and Lenton formed vigilante groups against it."
