Two roads to the north of Leicester are to undergo multi-million pound improvements.

The first scheme will see £7.8m spent on turning Anstey Lane into a dual carriageway between the A46 and Bennion Road in Beaumont Leys.

It's hoped this will help ease congestion around the 2,600 homes being built at Ashton Green.

The second will improve the A512 between Charnwood Road and Snell's Nook Lane to the west of the M1 costing £18.2m.

For those people who know when we improved the A50 into Leicester, only a mile away, we managed to do so with very little disruption. We're looking to do the same here."

The death of a former Leicestershire County Council chairman was confirmed yesterday afternoon.

    Tony Kershaw

Tony Kershaw served on the authority for 16 years, stepping down in May this year. He had also served on Charnwood Borough Council for two decades.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, who took over his Leicestershire division, described him as a very hard working councillor and his sudden death came as "very sad news".

    Quote Message

I'm very shocked and saddened to learn of Tony's passing so soon after his wife, Freda. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time."

Nick Rushton, Leader of Leicestershire County Council
