A rampant ram has been causing havoc in a Derbyshire village.

It's been seen lurking in a field in the village of Kirk Ireton, near Carsington Water and has attacked several walkers in recent weeks, according to the parish council.

David Evans who lives nearby was walking through the field blissfully ignorant of the ram when it "just charged" at him.

He said he wrestled with the animal for about 10 minutes, injuring his thumb, before he managed to get back over the stile and escape.

He said: "It's a nasty little beast. It's not very big, but it's got a huge head. Before long someone is going to get badly hurt. It's a public nuisance because the ram shouldn't be in a public field."

Kirk Ireton Parish Council said it spent some time attempting to find the owner of the field and has now sent a letter.

A hand-turned Victorian merry-go-round that travelled fairs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire has been sold at auction for £35,000 - almost £65,000 less than auctioneers had hoped.

It was made in 1895 and apart from a few coats of paint it's still in it's original condition and can carry up to nine children.

It retired at Nottingham's Goose Fair in 1979 and then sat in storage in the back of a lorry for about 30 years.

Charles Hanson, from the auctioneers, said the ride would now be sent across the Channel to the buyer in France.

He said: "[The carousel] is an example of British craftsmanship at its best, exemplified by the magnificent carved detail in each of the horses and peacocks created to delight children when Queen Victoria was still on the throne.

"It's an important, very early and unique carousel which captures the essence of the Victorian fairground."
