    Since Brian Cox left pop band D:Ream to become a physicist, the image of scientists has become a little cooler.

    Now an event in Leicester later this year is hoping that image continues, and is aiming to get more women interested in the field too.

    Felicity Easton, a doctoral researcher at the University of Leicester has organised the Soapbox Science event and wants to "challenge the public view of what a scientist looks like."

    She said: "After GCSE or A-level there's a complete drop off of how many females are engaged in research science so we are trying to change those views to inspire people.

    "And I'm hoping loads of young girls will go away from the event wanting to know more."

    Sir David Attenborough has been talking to BBC Radio Leicester about his memories of childhood adventures in the county - including hunting for precious stones in Mountsorrel.

    The broadcaster told Ben Jackson when he was 14 he discovered there were small garnet stones inside the local pink Mountsorrel granite.

    He said he "was obsessed by this" and used this knowledge during his scholarship interview for Cambridge University.

    He said the area is "marvellous" for anyone interested in geology - however he admitted he did make one mistake when it come to exploring Bradgate Park.

    He dismissed the land as a place to find fossils because the rocks are among "some of the oldest on earth".

    However one of his Wyggeston Grammar School classmates, Roger Mason, later identified the first Precambrian fossil worldwide at the park.

    Firefighters had to pull a 50-year-old man from a crash in Leicestershire.

    He and another casualty of the two-car collision in Markfield this morning were taken to hospital.

    An amputee who lost his leg when he was hit by a drink driver has been given a "super" limb with an "electronic brain".

    Jonathan Clarkson is now more free to go on his regular hikes because of the rare, high-tech leg with a microprocessor inside.

    He became an amputee in a crash 30 years ago when he was just 18. Now he works for the road safety partnership in Leicestershire and Rutland.

    He told the BBC: "Every night when I charge my phone I also have to charge my leg. It's a lot more safe and stable, it makes tough terrain more manageable.

    "Considering how long I have been an amputee I feel like one of the treasured few in Leicestershire."

    It looks like the cold and icy conditions won't be letting up any time soon.

    The Met Office has just issued a fresh weather warning for ice for the whole of the region - and most of the country - from 16:00 today until 11:00 tomorrow.

    A teenager has described the moment a gang of five men broke into his house and threatened him with a screwdriver before stealing £8,000 of gold.

    Ashin Anil, 19, and his family are one of 17 families from the Keralan community in Leicester who have been robbed of cash and gold over the past year.

    He believes the police did not do enough to investigate the crime, saying he was texted after two weeks to say the case was closed.

    Today members of the community will be meeting with the police and crime commissioner to demand more action.

    Police say they met with the community last month and believe they have thoroughly investigated all three robberies which were mentioned at that meeting. They also say they have been carrying out "proactive patrols".

    It's been snowing across the north of Derbyshire and the closures are piling up.

    Snake Pass, Winnats Pass in Castleton and Main Road in and out of Wardlow have been described by police as "impassable".

    Whaley Bridge has also been closed by a jack-knifed lorry.

    Buxton's market is shut because the heavy snow meant they couldn't set up their stalls or stock and the National Trust's Longshaw Estate has also closed.

    The public and the media have been asked not to attend a funeral service for a mother and her two children who died following a house fire in Collingham.

    Justine, Isabella and Harvey Collison died after their house caught fire 15 December. Their funerals will take place this Saturday in Newark.

    The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

    At least one person has been injured in a two-vehicle crash on a Leicestershire road.

    Fire crews, paramedics and police were called to the scene in Grange Lane, Nailstone, at about 7:40 this morning.

    Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening but the road is blocked to other traffic.

    In 2015 he was convicted of conspiracy to commit Robbery and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.

    Rutland county councillors voted last night to put forward a joint bid with the Ministry of Defence for a government grant to provide infrastructure for the proposed 2,215 home development, external at the St George's Barracks in North Luffenham.

    It was a close call with 12 county councillors for the £30m bid proposal and 11 against.

    Rutland residents turned out in large numbers to the meeting at the Oakham council chamber and the "unprecedented interest" caused the Conservative-run authority to set up additional seating in the nearby museum.

    Parish council representatives and county councillors spoke out against the plan which is being proposed on the current MoD site near to Rutland Water, which will cease to be an army base in 2021.

    Neil Newton from Empingham parish council called the scheme "a monstrous new modern housing scheme estate totally out of keeping with Rutland".

    Councillors Gary Conde and James Lammie both said the site would provide affordable housing and help prevent people who had grown up in the area moving away.

    The authority has a deadline of 22 March to put in a bid to the Housing Infrastructure fund. For the housing scheme, which includes a school, health centre and country park, to progress it would need to be adopted into the local plan and also granted planning permission.

    Some drivers are still trying to cross the closed Snake Pass - and are getting stuck.

    Police say they "don't have the resources" to keep bailing out drivers who ignore their "big flashing" road closed signs.

    The road, pictured in 2017, has been closed this morning because of snow and bad weather conditions making it dangerous to drive on.

    Volunteer group Peak 4x4 Response say cars are slipping, sliding and crashing or ditching their vehicle and it is a "risk to everyone".

    The Air Ambulance service is branching out...by opening its first superstore in the East Midlands.

    It's transforming a former Aldi supermarket in Somercotes into a huge shop and café which will raise funds for the lifesaving service.

    Kerry Martin, from the charity, said it will help make "loads more money to keep the helicopters flying".

    "It's the perfect location for us, perfect size for what we've been looking for for quite a number of years for our first superstore," she added.

    The charity sees this store as the first of a series selling second hand and new goods. It's due to open next month.

    Armed officers helped force entry in to a house to save a prisoner's pet.

    The RSPCA requested help to stop the gerbil dying or suffering unnecessarily because the prisoner was refusing to allow them to go in, despite being behind bars and therefore unable to feed it for a week.

    Officers found it alive "but very hungry" and took it to a vet, the city's safer neighbourhood team said.

    The investigation has now been handed over to the RSPCA.
