Experts are examining human remains, including a skull, which were discovered by contractors in Nottingham city centre yesterday afternoon.
The workers had been digging in the car park of Nelsons Solicitors on Stanford Street, just off Castle Gate.
The site was formerly part of the graveyard at St Nics Church, and the remains are thought to date back to the 19th century.
Workman Luke Beale told BBC Radio Nottingham it's the first time in 10 years of digging he has ever found a skull.
City archaeologist Scott Lomax said the bones included skull fragments of a child and two adults, adult femurs and many bags of bone fragments.
He said it was an interesting find given the shallow depth and there would now be a "careful examination" of the remains before they're reburied.

The mayor of Leicester has been learning about the issues blind people experience in the city by walking around blindfolded.
Peter Soulsby started his walk from the New Walk headquarters of the sight loss charity Vista.
Mr Soulsby said he felt "quite safe" to start with as the path is pedestrianised.
He was invited to do the walk by Pardeep Gill from Vista who said there are issues in the city centre for blind people - especially due to the removal of controlled crossings.
He said he's keen to work with the mayor to make Leicester a "true beacon of accessibility" for those with sight problems.
The shared space around Jubilee Square in the city has previously faced strong criticism from those with sight loss. It's been claimed the lack of kerbs make it difficult for trained guide dogs to know when to stop for cars.
Nottingham Forest defender Michael Hefele is expected to miss the rest of the season because of an Achilles injury.

A woman who died due to severe burns had accidentally set herself on fire in a homeless hostel while smoking, an inquest heard.
Derby Coroner's Court heard Kelly Miklasz, 22, had removed the metal cap and flint of a disposable lighter and used it to smoke, causing the fluid to set alight.
Miss Miklasz's mother Donna Lester said she had a "heart of gold".
Ms Lester added: "I miss her very much" and she was "heartbroken" that she must have been in so much pain while on fire.
The court heard that 65% of her body was burnt in the fire, which happened in Centenary House, in Mount Street, Derby, on 25 August.
Coroner Dr Robert Hunter returned the verdict of accidental death, concluding that she died from septicaemia and multiple organ failure, due to severe and extensive thermal burns.

It's been proposed the space is used for weddings, craft fairs and beer festivals but Labour have called it a "vanity project".

The flag outside Melton Borough Council is flying at half-mast following the death of a "well-respected" councillor.
The authority has confirmed Michael Blase died on Tuesday. He was elected to the council at a by-election for the Egerton Ward in May 2016.
Quote MessageI have not only lost a valued member of the council but also a thoroughly decent person and a great friend. Michael always acted in the best interests of the community and put aside any political differences for the greater good of the borough."

A 20mph zone pilot project by Derbyshire County Council can't be analysed for cost/benefit, because there was no benefit.
In 2015 the authority bowed to pressure from rural communities and started the trial in part of Padfield.
In the three years since there have been three accidents in which someone was injured - that compares to none in the five years when the road had a 30mph limit. This means a cost/benefit analysis can't be done.
Average speeds only fell by one mile per hour. The council has said 20mph limits might still work but only where speed bumps are introduced alongside them.

Nottingham East MP Chris Leslie has joined a group of MPs who have been debating the issue of knife crime in Parliament today.
The Labour MP called for a public inquiry into knife crime following a series of murders including the death of 14-year-old Jaden Moodie, who was stabbed in East London earlier this month.
The teenager had recently moved to the capital from Nottingham when he was knocked off a moped and stabbed to death.

Scammers tried to get a woman's bank details by saying she was due a council tax refund, she says.
Emma Lee said a male caller told her he needed her credit card details because a computer error meant Melton Borough Council owed her money.
She says she did not lose any money but wants people to be aware of the scam. The council is also aware of it and has said it would never call anyone to ask for bank details.

Nottingham's tram bosses say the network is fit for purpose, despite a series of delays and cancellations in recent days.
At least four services were pulled this morning and on Monday more than 20 services were cancelled.
Mike Mabey from Nottingham Express Transit (NET) said a number of trams have required maintenance meaning some journeys have been pulled at short notice.
He said: "I can fully understand how customers get frustrated but let me assure you we are doing our utmost to keep the service running as punctually as possible and minimise disruption to our customers."

Police say they are linking a number of distraction burglaries in Derby in which a group of people have entered a shop and distracted the shopkeeper while another person stole items from a stockroom or flat upstairs.
On Monday, at around 13:30, a shop in Chaddesden Lane was targeted when a woman made her way into the flat upstairs, taking a substantial amount of gold jewellery, cash and an iPad.
On Tuesday, a similar theft happened at a shop in Nottingham Road, Borrowash at 12:10 and, on Wednesday, a shop in Oversetts Road, Newhall was targeted also at about 12:10.
Police said they're also linking these to burglaries in West Mercia on 28 December, in Willington on 7 December and Derby on 25 October.
Det Sgt Steph Thandi, said: "I’d urge all shop owners to ensure that interior doors are secure and that there is no access to private living areas."
She said the group are believed to be travelling around in either a silver Ford Galaxy or Vauxhall Zafira.
