A woman has gone on trial accused of killing her newborn baby at a farm in Leicestershire.

Hannah Cobley, 29, of Broughton Road, Stoney Stanton, denies murdering the unnamed infant in April 2017.

The prosecution at Leicester Crown Court told jurors the baby was born prematurely but otherwise healthy at 32 weeks following a concealed pregnancy and clandestine birth.

The court heard the defendant deliberately and intentionally killed her child in an outhouse toilet at Stanton Farm, where she lived with her parents

The prosecution said she silenced the baby's cries by forcing something into its throat, then assaulted it, causing severe head injuries, before sealing it inside three plastic bags and abandoning it in the garden.

The court heard internet searches by Ms Cobley shortly after the baby was born included "how long can a baby survive without milk in the freezing cold?", which the prosecution said proved she was thinking rationally before and after the birth.

    The trial continues.
