The announcement comes as part of a review started by the firm before the coronavirus crisis hit, which further damaged demand for cars.

These have been difficult decisions for the board to make and our priority now is to manage the transition to our new operating model. The Covid-19 pandemic is a uniquely challenging situation and we want to protect as many jobs as we can sustainably and the proposed redundancies are, of course, extremely regrettable."

  13. Coronavirus: 'Release Leicester from its chains'published at 09:40 British Summer Time 30 July 2020

    PA Media

Ministers can "release Leicester from its chains" by easing the local lockdown, the police and crime commissioner for Leicestershire has said ahead of an expected decision today.

Peers heard the plea from Lord Willy Bach, who was unable to attend a House of Lords debate on regulations related to the lockdown in the area.

Lord Campbell-Savours said he was reading out a speech from his Labour colleague to ensure his words were included in Hansard, the official report of parliamentary debates.

The chamber was told Lord Bach backed the lockdown following a spike in local cases, although he criticised the government for an "absurd" delay in drafting the regulations.

Lord Bach highlighted a decrease in positive coronavirus tests, adding the seven-day infection rate "has fallen dramatically at a time when huge amounts of testing are taking place".

    BBC News

Fast fashion giant Boohoo has outlined the terms of an independent review into its supply chain, stating it wants to "help restore confidence in the Leicester garment industry".

The company is looking into its own working practices after allegations workers in its supply chain were paid as little as £3.50 an hour and workers were allegedly "being forced to come into work while sick with COVID-19".

A Boohoo spokesman said: "The purpose of this independent review is to consider the group's obligations and relevant duties of care in relation to the workforce in its Leicester supply chain."

The company said the review "will investigate the allegations made in relation to the Leicester supply chain and determine whether they are well-founded" and "make recommendations for the future in response to those findings".
