A woman has been banned from keeping animals after RSPCA inspectors found she had left her dog locked in a house starving for almost two months.

The RSPCA said the five-year-old husky cross, called Yogi, was like a "walking skeleton" and weighed just 8kg (17lbs).

Her owner Ayla Gilchrist appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court earlier this month where she pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offences and admitted leaving Yogi alone at her house in Egreaves Avenue, Heanor, Derbyshire, with no food.

Gilchrist, 24, now of Gleadless Road, Sheffield, was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 weeks, and banned from keeping pets.

The RSPCA said they were contacted after Yogi was spotted through a window by a housing officer in January last year looking underweight and among dirty nappies, litter and dog faeces.

Animal rescuer, Rachel Leafe, said: "Her stomach was so sucked in that it looked like somebody could easily wrap their hands around her waist. I could not see any food or water. I was very concerned that if the dog was to be left any longer she may not survive."

After emergency veterinary treatment, Yogi is now back to full health and has been re-homed with new owners.

An ambulance volunteer who died earlier this month has been described by his family as "incredibly kind, generous and would do anything for anyone".

Malcolm Kirk, 77, worked as an East Midlands Ambulance Service community first responder (CFR) for 17 years after retiring as a printer at the Newark Advertiser.

In that time, he responded to medical emergencies in the area and picked up a Heart Hero Award in 2016 for saving a man's life.

He also raised funds for seven publicly accessible defibrillators across Southwell, including the one that was used on him when he collapsed suddenly on 6 March.

In a statement, his family said: "He was always looking out for ways to better the lives of other people.

"When Malcolm signed up to become a CFR, I don't think any of us realised the commitment he would give to the role – if he didn’t have something planned then he was always in his uniform and logged on to respond to anyone in need."

More recently, Malcolm had been supporting the Covid-19 vaccination programme.

Mario Stankovic, who co-ordinates the Southwell CFR scheme, said Malcolm was "a chirpy chap who always took the time to talk to people and make them smile".

  19. Father remembered one year after Covid deathpublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2021

    BBC Radio Leicester

It's been over a year since a Leicester man became one of the first known people in the UK to die from coronavirus.

Michael Gerard, 73, from Clarendon Park died on 22 March - one day before the first national lockdown began.

His daughter Sushila Moles told BBC Radio Leicester she'd spoken to him on the phone a few days earlier.

She said: "He had really bad health anyway and he was getting a bit of a cough and I remember saying to him 'are you alright? Are you sure you haven't got this virus?'".

    Michael GerardImage source, Family photo

She said her father, a musician who performed in numerous orchestras, told her he'd spoken to doctors and was sure he didn't have Covid.

However, a few days later her mother called to say he had been taken to hospital and was in a coma.

Both were allowed to the hospital on the day that Mr Gerard died, but it was too late for them to see him alive again.

Ms Moles said: "Grief is a strange thing for everybody and you go through different phases of it, but it happening during a pandemic, when life and rules are changing all the time, you're constantly trying to find a new normal.

"We haven't managed to have any kind of celebration of his life - a memorial or anything - because we haven't been able to."

  20. 'Burnout' warning over NHS patient backlogpublished at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2021

    Rob Sissons
Health Correspondent, BBC East Midlands Today

Hospital bosses say the huge waiting list backlog in the NHS will need to be tackled steadily to avoid NHS staff burning out.

Across the East Midlands, the relentless pressure over the past year has left many hospital workers exhausted.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals in Nottinghamshire has discharged 1,455 patients who have had Covid, while there have been 560 deaths among patients who tested positive at the trust.

The intensity of the work has led to a backlog of patients waiting for treatment.

    King's Mill Hospital

Medical director David Selwyn said: "When we went into the pandemic we had no patients waiting over a year for treatment... now we have over a thousand patients waiting that long."

Pacing the recovery of pre-pandemic NHS services will be key to ensuring staff have time to rest and recuperate after a year which for many will have been the most difficult of their careers.

About 40 patients with Covid-19 are currently being looked after at King’s Mill Hospital - that’s down from a January peak of 220.

The hope is the worst of the pandemic is over, but the hospital trust said it was ready for any localised flare-up of cases in the months ahead.
