The project will create 6,000 new homes in six new waterside villages near Scunthorpe.

The first phase of the £1.2bn Lincolnshire Lakes project which could eventually see 6,000 homes built near Scunthorpe has been approved by North Lincolnshire Council.

The plans, which include new homes in Burringham and a £13.5m roundabout junction off the M181.

The first phase will feature up to 2,500 new homes including a village centre, a health care facility, community facilities, a primary school, new roads and footpaths.

Councillors gave the project the green light in June 2016, but needed agreement over developer contributions. This resulted in a delay of more than three years and a request by the authority to extend the deadline to September. The M181 junction was also given initial backing by councillors in January.

Sainsbury’s has launched a trial at its Lincoln superstore which removes plastic produce bags for loose fruit and veg.

The company says it's the first step in its commitment to removing the bags from stores entirely by September, cutting a further 1,284 tonnes of plastic this year.Customers will have the option of bringing their own containers in to store or purchasing a reusable drawstring bag made from 100% recycled materials for 30p.

The trial will run into August.

A giant poppy featuring the names of every British and Commonwealth serviceman and woman lost in World War One has been unveiled.

The striking 8.5ft Poppy of Honour has 1,117,635 individual remembrance poppies inside it.

Each smaller poppy bears the name of a soldier, along with their rank and the date they were killed or went missing.

The memorial is at The International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln today and tomorrow as part of a tour around the country.

A GP surgery in Gainsborough has been rated as "inadequate" by the health watchdog which has released a damming inspection report.

The surgery at Cleveland Street has previously been classed as "good" in 2018.

But during a visit in May, inspectors from the Care Quality Commission found that a GP had claimed to have reviewed 99 cases of patients with depression in less than five hours on a single day.

The watchdog found none of the patients had been contacted.

It also highlighted a week in which no outgoing mail, including patient referrals and appointment cancellations, had been sent out because no one had topped up the credit for the surgery's franking machine.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group said it was recognised that additional clinical and managerial support was required.

He added Dr James Thompson and colleagues from The Welby Group will be joining Cleveland Surgery on a permanent basis.

Dr Thompson said he was excited to start working with the practice team to bring about the changes needed to ensure patients registered with the practice receive good patient care.

The A1133 in Laughterton will be closed on three evenings next week as work to repair the carriageway is carried out.

From Wednesday, a full road closure will be in place between Broom Hills and the A156 for three evenings from 19:00 to 06:00.

The signed diversion route will be via A156/A57/A1133 and vice versa.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council said: “Immediately following the improvement works still under way in Sturton-by-Stow, the contractor will be moving on to Laughterton to reconstruct a section of the A1133.

“Three evenings will be needed to carry out the repairs. They remain subject to suitable weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

“We’ll do our absolute best to keep disruption to a minimum during the works.”

Three men are due in court later after cannabis with an estimated street value of £4m was found in Scunthorpe.

More than 15,000 cannabis plants were found at an industrial unit on Park Farm Road.

The three men have been charged with being concerned in the production of a controlled drug, namely cannabis.

They are due before Grimsby Magistrates Court today.

A 24-year-old man from Lincolnshire is in hospital being treated for serious head injuries following a serious assault in Cleethorpes.

The incident happened on St Peter’s Avenue just after 03:00 on Sunday.

The victim was knocked unconscious and suffered a bleed on the brain, a blood clot, and a fractured skull but his injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

The suspect is described as a skinny white man in his mid-20s, with brown hair, about 5ft 10ins.

He was wearing blue jeans and a white top with grey shoulders.

He could have been riding a bicycle, police say.

Lincoln City FC winger Harry Anderson has signed a new long-term contract at Sincil Bank Stadium.

The 22-year-old winger joined in August 2016 and has made more than 120 appearances, scoring more than 20 times for the Imps, with winners’ medals in the National League, EFL Trophy and League Two.

He said: “The amount of change around here at the club is phenomenal, and it’s been really good to play a part in that.

Lincolnshire Polcie said he was arrested in the Haverstock Hill area of the capital on Tuesday.

The force said a 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and released on bail pending further investigations.

The Favourite Market Trader Award for 2019 went to Mick and Mark, who regularly have their stall at Horncastle and Louth.

There have been 36,000 government-funded trees planted in North Kesteven between 2010 and 2018, Forestry Commission data shows.

This works out at 312 trees per 1,000 people.

Between 2010 and 2018 the government funded about 15 million trees in England. Figures for trees planted with private funds or by local councils are not included and the data only covers new trees, not replacements for any that were cut down.

Overall tree planting rates across the UK would need to more than double to combat rising temperatures and climate change, according to official figures.

Last year 13,400 hectares of new trees were planted across the UK, most of them in Scotland, but the Committee on Climate Change says this should rise to at least 30,000 hectares a year.

Campaign group The Woodland Trust said more trees were needed to provide summer shade, reduce air pollution, improve water quality and manage flooding.

The government said it had made it "much easier" to apply for planting grants.

Two teenagers who were arrested in connection with a sexual assault in Holbeach have been released on bail.

The two boys are 13 and 16 years old.

Lincolnshire Police received a report of a sexual assault in the Stukeley Hall Park area of the town at about 20:30 on Monday.

Anyone who was in the Stukeley Hall Park area between 19:00 and 20:30 and who thinks they may be able to help with the investigation is being asked to contact Lincolnshire Police.
