    Lincoln county

The warning comes after some patients in Lincolnshire have revealed they are too scared to go to hospitals for treatment due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    Quote Message

Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group's Director of Nursing, Martin Fahy, says they've been ahead of the curve in many respects:

    Quote Message

We were absolutely the front-runner in our hospital hub, front-runner in our AstraZeneca hub that opened up earlier this week. We were among the very first pre-Christmas with those local vaccination primary care centres. I don't think there's any fault here."

Dr Dave Baker, from the the Vine House Surgery in Grantham, says they've had lots of calls from people wanting to know when they're going to get the jab.

    Quote Message

Meanwhile, the vaccine hub at the Meres in Grantham is looking to extend its opening times up to 10 hours a day, seven days a week, it's been confirmed.

  7. Council bosses criticise 'veil of secrecy' over vaccinespublished at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2021

The leaders of Lincolnshire's county councils and the county council have signed a joint letter to the Health Secretary Matt Hancock criticising the "veil of secrecy" surrounding plans for the rollout of Covid vaccines.

    Vaccine

The letter, by Martin Hill, leader of Lincolnshire County Council and chair of Lincolnshire Outbreak Engagement Board, was sent on behalf of all the county's council leaders.

It asks Mr Hancock to be more transparent about the vaccine rollout programme.

In the letter, Mr Hill says local government is "very keen" to support the NHS.

He adds: "However, this support is very much being constrained by national edicts which are apparently preventing local managers from sharing details of their local delivery plans with us.

"As you are well aware, there will be an understandable demand from the public to understand when and where they can expect their vaccinations.

"To attempt to cover the plans in a veil of secrecy makes no sense to them or us, and will only undermine confidence and patience locally," he adds.

Assistant Ch Con Kerrin Wilson says she understands there are lots of other key workers out there, but the force also needs to be able to keep doing its job.

She adds that unlike shops, the police force can't just close:

    Quote Message

I do get that there are lots of other key workers out there, but if a shop shuts because they've go no staff because they've got Covid, then the shop is shut. We can't shut the police force down because I haven't got the staff to come out there and save lives, and that's the challenge I would put back to government when they're looking at that priority list."

The council announced the decision on Tuesday, saying the pandemic had put a huge strain on its services.

Councillors said a rise was needed so the authority can invest in the county's infrastructure as well as maintain day-to-day services.

Councillor Martin Hill says the money has to come from somewhere:

    Quote Message

A lot of our costs are because we have to provide certain services. If you say you're not going to put council tax up by 2%, where is the £6m coming from? That's the challenge."

Councillor Martin Hill, Leader, Lincolnshire County Council

  16. Head criticises vocational exams go-ahead as 'disgrace'published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2021

A Lincolnshire head teacher has criticised the decision to allow vocational exams to go ahead this month, even though GCSEs and A-Levels planned for summer have been cancelled.

The government has left it up to individual schools to decide whether they should take place.

Further education college leaders had complained this was unfair to students, saying they would face "stress" from taking exams in the lockdown.

The Department for Education said it recognised "this is a difficult time", but wanted to allow students who had prepared for exams and assessments to continue, including those who needed to take hands-on practical tests for qualifications for jobs.

However, Matthew Van Lier, head teacher of Haven High in Boston, says the move means staff have effectively been forced into holding them or risking damaging students' prospects.

    Quote Message

I cannot believe these exams are still taking place. It is, in my view, an utter disgrace. We're asking our students to break lockdown legislation to come into school to complete the examination. Furthermore, we're asking staff to invigilate these students. It's just simply not good enough, it's not well thought through."

As England goes into its third lockdown, Assistant Ch Con Chris Noble said the rules will be enforced if people ignore them.

In a statement, he said: “While I understand some people are frustrated, I urge people to consider very carefully how they respond to these latest precautions over the next few weeks.

"We will use enforcement when we need to, and we will be issuing fines to anyone who is responsible for a flagrant breach of the rules," he added.

Officers will be patrolling "hot spot" areas and will tackle anyone who is "blatantly breaking the regulations or showing disregard for health and safety", the Humberside force said.

  19. Coronavirus: What's the situation in Lincolnshire?published at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2021

    Rob England
    BBC England Data Unit

A few days into England's third national lockdown, the East Midlands as a wider area covering Lincolnshire has one of the lowest regional infection rates in the country - but it is increasing.

The area recorded about 280 positive cases for every 100,000 people as of the latest figures, the sixth highest out of England’s nine regions.

But in context locally, this was an increase of nearly two thirds on the previous week.

Chart showing coronavirus cases across the East MidlandsImage source, .

Across Lincolnshire, South Kesteven had the highest infection rate of 412 cases per 100,000 people as of 1 January - this increased by a third on the previous week. North East Lincolnshire saw the lowest rate of about 168 cases per 100,000, one of the lowest in England.

South Kesteven saw the most people taking lab-based coronavirus tests as a percentage of the population in the latest week, with about 3% of people tested, although the number of tests seems to have fallen over the holiday period.

South Kesteven also recorded the highest percentage of positive lab-based tests, at about 14.3%. Experts have suggested a high positivity percentage means more testing is needed to detect undiagnosed cases in the community.

Hospital admissions do not seem to have changed dramatically over the last few weeks across Lincolnshire. United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust had 202 beds with coronavirus patients as of 30 December, falling from 246 a month ago. Admissions at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust also fell over the same period.

Overall, there seems to be a mixed picture across Lincolnshire in terms of the impact of coronavirus. Cases are rising in most places, but rates - compared to elsewhere in England - are still relatively low, making it difficult to assess the impact on local NHS capacity.
