The main financial backer for Liberty Steel, which has a plant in North Lincolnshire, has gone into administration putting jobs at risk.
Liberty Steel owns 12 steel plants across the UK, including the site off Rodmill Road in Scunthorpe.
Company boss Sanjeev Gupta says the collapse of its main financial backer "creates a challenging situation".
He was speaking at crisis talks with unions concerned for the future of the business after specialist bank Greensill Capital went into administration.
The collapse puts 5,000 jobs at risk at Liberty Steel and other firms.
Mr Gupta said his group was taking "prudent steps" to manage cash.
Greensill Capital was the main lender to Mr Gupta's sprawling empire, GFG Alliance, which includes Liberty Steel.

Two South Lincolnshire districts continue to have among the highest Covid-19 infection rates in both the county and England in general.
According to the government’s coronavirus dashboard, Boston is still fifth highest with a seven-day infection rate of 151.1 cases per 100,000 people, while South Holland sits 11th at 143.1 per 100,000.
Lincolnshire’s health bosses, however, say numbers are falling and their most up-to-date figures show lower infection rates of 114 and 137.9 per 100,000 people.
Andy Fox, assistant director of public health at Lincolnshire County Council, says: "That has come down from more than 200 just a couple of weeks ago. But the issue is they’re probably not dropping down as fast as other areas."
Mr Fox added that the rest of the county was doing well, with the highest districts just under the national average, while the lowest were far lower.
Last week was the busiest of 2021 so far for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.
The crew responded to 34 emergencies during the week.
The team is reminding people the service can only keep going through donations and support:

About 45% of adults in Lincolnshire have so far received a coronavirus vaccine, latest figures show.
More than 22 million people across the UK as a whole have now received a first dose of a vaccine, and more than one million people have had a second.
The current seven-day average for first doses is just over 300,000 doses a day - down from more than 400,000 a day in early February.
But Lincolnshire's public health team says the county is ahead of the curve, compared to the Covid vaccine rollout across the UK.
Quote MessageThe figures I'm looking at suggest we've got over 45% of adults in Lincolnshire vaccinated now - so not too far away from 50%."

It should stay largely dry through the day today, with patchy cloud and a few sunny spells.
The odd light shower cannot be completely ruled out. A gentle to moderate wind.
It will stay dry this evening, with cloud thickening from the west.
A band of heavy rain will push eastwards overnight, accompanied by a brisk wind:
Do you recognise this person? Police want to identify them in connection with an arson attack in Lincolnshire earlier this year.
A car was set on fire on Imp Close in Lincoln in January and though it didn't fully ignite, damage was caused to the interior of the vehicle, according to Lincolnshire Police.
Officers say they want help identifying the person in the picture above - who is thought to be between 13 and 20 - as they may be able to help with their investigations.
Anyone who recognises the person in the image is being asked to contact the Lincolnshire force.

Read MoreTen people have been issued with fines for a "blatant disregard" of Covid regulations after police found them gathered together in the village of Manby, near Louth, at the weekend.
Lincolnshire Police said they attended Beach Grove Hall, an abandoned former RAF building, at around 21:30 GMT on Saturday.
The 10 people, a mixture of men and women aged between 17 and 23, were issued with the £200 fixed penalty notices for non-essential travel and gathering in a social group.
Insp Sarah Constantine said: “This is a blatant disregard for the current Covid legislation. This group not only put themselves at risk of injury but also emergency services staff at risk of injury by entering this site. Breaches like this can also have an impact on the NHS."
A new outdoor festival planned for Lincolnshire has been postponed until next year due to concerns about coronavirus.
Organisers of the Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival - which was due to take place in May - said despite the easing of restrictions, too many uncertainties remained to do the event justice and ensure the safety of those attending.
Efforts will instead go to running a campaign celebrating the Wolds as a place to visit, get active and explore, they said.
The event – which replaces the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival - involves a number of organisations, including The Ramblers, Heritage Lincolnshire, and East and West Lindsey district councils.
It is hoped it will return in April 2022.
Quote MessageDespite the easing of restrictions, we feel we wouldn’t be able to put on a festival that fully did justice to the wonderful Lincolnshire Wolds, while ensuring full Covid security. I hope that everyone will understand that first and foremost we have a duty of care to both activity providers and those who would be attending."

A plan by supermarket chain Tesco to sell unwashed potatoes in its stores has been welcomed by a producer in Lincolnshire.
The firm is selling unwashed white potatoes at 262 of its stores as part of a trial, according to media reports.
The idea is to reduce food waste, as the potatoes last longer with dirt on them.
Craig Williamson, who produces potatoes at his farm near Gainsborough, says they can last "a long, long time, if you keep them right".
Quote MessageThey do keep much better in a dirty state. We've had customers who come and get them in November and that bag of potatoes could last them until February."
