    The London mayor will head to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories on Monday for a three-day visit, it's been announced.

    Boris Johnson said: "We're heading to a region with enormous potential for stronger links with London."  

    His efforts to strengthen London's international trade links took him to Japan recently, a trip which will probably be remembered for this incident above all else.

    One of South London’s oldest live music entertainment venues is to close its doors, external. Bosses of the Coronet at Elephant and Castle said rather than fighting to stay open they would focus on celebrating its “incredible history”.

    British astronaut Tim Peake has held his final pre-launch press conference at the Science Museum before being launched into space next month.

    The 43-year-old, who is Britain's first government-backed astronaut, said: "I feel privileged to be a part of this incredible adventure in international cooperation." 

    Minister for Universities and Science Jo Johnson said: "Tim Peake's launch in December will be a historic moment for the UK in space, and marks the culmination of our partnership with the International Space Station."

    Mr Peake will embark for a six-month stay on the space station on 15 December.

  5. Easyjet flights from Sharm suspendedpublished at 10:45

    Easyjet rescue flights for Britons stranded in Sharm el-Sheikh have been suspended by Egyptian authorities, the airline has said.

    Easyjet said officials are not allowing UK aircraft to land at the airport.

    Two planes at the airport due to fly to Gatwick and Luton will still depart.

    The London Fire Brigade has confirmed no fire was found at the National Gallery despite earlier reports of the smell of smoke.

  7. Karren Brady defends West Ham stadium planspublished at 10:19

    The Olympic Stadium will be "one of the greatest arenas in world football", according to West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady.

    The Hammers will leave Upton Park and move in to the new stadium for the start of next season.

    In August, BBC Sport revealed West Ham will have many of the running costs for the stadium met by the taxpayer.

  9. Confusion and frustration in Sharmpublished at 10:02

    Passengers hoping to fly to Gatwick on Easyjet have now been told their flight is not going. There's lots of confusion and frustration among holidaymakers in Sharm el-Sheikh.

    Easyjet had previously said it would flying six extra planes today to transport the numbers home, but the firm now says rescue flights "have been suspended by the Egyptian authorities".

    Museums and galleries will be required to scrutinise the ethical standards of companies that provide sponsorship in the future under new rules.

    The move follows unhappiness at Shell sponsoring a climate science gallery at the Science Museum and BP's sponsorship of institutions including the British Museum and Tate.

  11. Man stabbed to death in Kilburnpublished at 09:23

    A man died after being stabbed in Watling Gardens, Kilburn, at about 15:00 yesterday.

    Ambulance crews, external were called at about 14:45 but the man, believed to be in his early 20s, died at the scene.

    No arrests have been made yet.

  12. Man jailed after throwing passenger's walking frame off buspublished at 09:12

    Kashif Samuels has been jailed for four months after he hurled racist and Islamophobic abuse at a Turkish man in Tottenham - and then threw the man's walking frame off the bus.

    Mobile phone footage of the attack on 15 October went viral.

    Samuels, 25, of Duffield Drive, Tottenham handed himself into the police when he saw the footage and said he was "ashamed and disgusted" at his actions.

  13. Record sales: 215 'starter-flats' sold in three hours in Hounslowpublished at 09:00

    Galliard Homes said it sold 215 studio apartments and one-bed flats in its Trinity Square development in Hounslow last night in a three hour sales record.

    Some people camped overnight for the first-come first-served opportunity to buy a flat in the yet to be converted former offices of American Airlines in Staines Road.

    More than 50% of buyers were owner occupiers from the Hounslow area and the rest were investors, the developer said.

    Pupils at St George the Martyr Primary School in Holborn have been told they must adopt the pose in order to "strengthen pupil safety, raise their aspirations and maximise learning time".

  15. Russian plane crash: Airlines to begin Sharm el-Sheikh repatriations to UKpublished at 08:44

    Tight security will be in place as airlines start to bring back Britons from Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh today.

    Easyjet, Monarch, Thomson and British Airways will all run UK-bound flights, due to start leaving mid-morning.

    Passengers will only be able to carry hand luggage on board, with hold baggage to be transported separately.

  16. Accident causing heavy congestion on the M25published at 08:27

    There's heavy traffic on the M25 anti-clockwise between J28 and J27, and the picture is the same on the M4 westbound after J2. 

    Southern trains between east Croydon and London Bridge are disrupted due to signalling problems. 

    There are also signalling issues on the Overground, with no service between Gunnersbury and Richmond, and on trains to and from Liverpool Street.

  17. Three police officers injured in clashes with anti-capitalist protesterspublished at 08:20

    Three officers have been taken to hospital following clashes at the Million Mask March.

    Their injuries have been described as non life-threatening.

    Two people have been arrested for assaulting a police officer and some protesters have also been treated for injuries and were given first aid at the scene.
