  4. Mechanic guilty of murdering 'beautiful and talented' lawyerpublished at 17:47

    A mechanic accused of raping and strangling a "beautiful and talented" aspiring young barrister has pleaded guilty to her murder. 

    Peter Kibisu, 23, killed Elizabeth Nnyanzi, a former Cheltenham Ladies' College pupil, in the bedroom of her £600,000 family home in Harrow, north west London, on 14 August.

    At the time of her death, Miss Nnyanzi, 31, had recently started work at a top law firm while the defendant, a close family friend, was lodging in the house. 

  5. Accused Hatton Garden getaway driver was busy ‘buying fish’published at 17:35

    A man accused of acting as getaway driver for the Hatton Garden burglary was miles away at the time buying fish for Good Friday, a court has heard.

    William Lincoln, 60, is accused of helping to execute the largest burglary in British legal history in which £14m of jewels and precious metals were stolen from a safe deposit box company closed for the Easter Bank Holiday.

    The group, led by Brian Reader, 76, drilled into the reinforced concrete vault of the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit company before making off with the contents of dozens of boxes of valuables, it is claimed.

    But Mr Lincoln's mobile was used early the following morning at around 4.40am - the time of the alleged events - in East India, close to the famous Billingsgate Fish Market, the court heard.

    According to prosecutors, Mr Lincoln's phone was later picked up near Hatton Garden and the home of co-conspirator John Collins. 

    His car was also spotted in the London Bridge area, jurors heard.

    Mr Lincoln denies the charges of conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to conceal, convert or transfer criminal property.

    The A315 has severe delays both ways because of an accident.

    Chiswick High Road is partially blocked and there's queuing traffic in both directions at the B490 Acton Lane junction.

    The Terrace in Barnes is closed and there are delays in both directions between the A3003 Mortlake High Street junction and the A3003 Barnes High Street junction, because of a building collapse. 

    There is a diversion in operation, affecting buses 209, 419 and N22.

  8. Spy agency GCHQ could face fines for 'hipster' job adverts on London streetspublished at 17:07

    Hackney Council says GCHQ could be fined after it marked out job adverts on pavements in the London borough.

    The authority says it didn't give permission for the spy agency to create the words on streets around Shoreditch.

    The adverts said "GCH-WHO? Technical opportunities" and included a website address, external.

    "If we get evidence that any of these adverts are definitely in Hackney we will take enforcement action," Hackney Council said in a statement.

    Responding to recommendations that London Ambulance Service NHS Trust should be placed into special measures, Sadiq Khan, Labour candidate for Mayor of London, said: “Londoners will be shocked that this crucial service has received such a shocking inspection.

    "This is about people's lives and the fact the Tory Government have allowed the London Ambulance Service to fall into such a poor state is nothing short of a disgrace. 

    "The Government's neglect is an insult to Londoners."

  10. Woman charged with manslaughter of baby boypublished at 16:46

    A woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a 10-month-old baby boy at a London hospital in September 2014.

    Viktoria Tautz, 33, from Haringey was bailed to appear at Hendon Magistrates' Court on 8 January.

  11. Warning over online dating scams after woman was duped out of £1.6mpublished at 16:25

    Detectives are warning about the dangers of internet dating scams after a woman was duped out of £1.6 million by fraudsters. 

    It was the biggest online dating scam the Metropolitan Police have investigated, said Ch Insp Gary Miles. 

    Olusegun Agbaje, 43, of Kershaw Close, Hornchurch, Essex and Ife Ojo, 31, of Hammonds Drive, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, admitted their part in the scam. 

    They will return to court on 8 January.

    Their sentencing was adjourned earlier at Basildon Crown Court after the Probation Service failed to produce a report requested at conviction. 

    The victim, an Asian divorcee in her 40s from Hillingdon, west London, believed she was communicating with a white man called Christian Anderson who was an engineer working in the oil industry in Africa.

  12. Dentist fears 'can be overcome by CBT'published at 16:16

    Scared of going to the dentist? Talk about it.

    That's the advice of King's College London, external's researchers, whose study shows 80% of patients with dental phobia were able to be treated after receiving cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

    Around one in 10 people suffers from dental phobia, the most recent Adult Dental Health Survey in the UK found.

    “People with dental phobia are most commonly given sedation to allow them to become relaxed enough for a short period of time to have their dental treatment performed. However, this does not help them to overcome their fear in the long term," said Professor Tim Newton from the Dental Institute at King’s College London and lead author of the study.

    "Our study shows that after on average five CBT sessions, most people can go on to be treated by the dentist without the need to be sedated.”

  13. Ex-Dragons' Den star Doug Richard denies paying child for sexpublished at 16:00

    A former panellist on Dragon's Den has denied paying a 13-year-old girl for sex after meeting her online.

    Doug Richard, 57, is accused of engaging in sexual activity after contacting her through a website.

    He denies sexual activity with a child, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and a charge of paying a child for sexual services.

    Mr Richard, of Islington, north London, is due back in court for a trial scheduled to start on 25 January.

    A communist accused of presiding over a cult in London said he was having sex with four female members of his collective in the 1980s. 

    Aravindan Balakrishnan, 75, denies charges including rape, indecent assault, false imprisonment and child cruelty.

    He told Southwark Crown Court: "They were literally throwing themselves at me."

    The trial continues.

  16. Religious education in England 'needs overhaul'published at 15:01

    Religious education in England's schools needs a total overhaul to bring the subject into the 21st Century, a report argues., external

    Religious belief has changed sharply in recent years but religious education has not kept pace, says the Goldsmiths, University of London, report.

    "Content should reflect the real religious landscape," said co-author Prof Adam Dinham.

    The government says its approach promotes knowledge of all religions.

    The report comes after a High Court ruling the government made "an error of law" in leaving "non-religious world views" out of a new religious studies GCSE to be studied from next year.
