The Labour MP Stephen Kinnock has told BBC Radio London the party's leader and Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn will struggle to achieve loyalty from his party considering his own track record of defying former Labour leaders.

Mr Corbyn sacked two members of his cabinet yesterday - claiming they'd been disloyal; and he promoted his neighbouring Islington South MP Emily Thornberry to Shadow Defence Secretary. Stephen Kinnock says the reshuffle could cause him more problems.

“We have a leader who himself as an MP over the 30 years he’s been in parliament has defied the whip 550 times and he’s now looking to lead a loyalty driven reshuffle.

"So that just inevitably causes challenges and it’s gonna cause push back because people say well you yourself haven’t got a track record of loyalty."

Mr Kinnock said he was also surprised at the accusation of incompetence pitted at Michael Dugher: “I had understood that this reshuffle was about loyalty so I was quite surprised about the comments on competence.

"One of the reasons I don’t think that a reshuffle was the right thing to do now is because the team hadn’t had time to show whether it was incompetent or competent so it needs a bit more time to bed down.

"But I think now we’ve got to find a way of putting this behind us and actually turning our fire back on this government because they are our opponents. We’ve got to stop turning the fire on ourselves.”
