    Mayor of London Boris Johnson has finally abandoned his ill-considered plans to demolish Crystal Palace’s athletics stadium and indoor track, external, following the deeply flawed consultation conducted by a company which has London’s Olympic hero, Seb Coe, as its executive chairman.

    Two Met Police constables have been dismissed for gross misconduct after a teenager died when he was punched in south-east London in September 2013.

    George Verrier, 17, suffered head injuries in a fight after a party in Bromley. He later died in hospital.

    A four-day hearing found PC Claire Derbyshire and PC Peter Cruise failed to assist the victim and later gave "misleading reports".

    An 18-year-old was convicted of manslaughter over the death in 2014.

  3. Poor part-time pay in London 'stops mothers working'published at 10:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Part-time work is growing fast in London, but much of it is poorly paid, according to the London Assembly.

    Mothers in the capital face particular difficulty in finding jobs that enable them to combine work with childcare.

    Only 60% of women with dependent children are in work compared with 69% in the rest of the UK.

    And nearly half of all 18-24 year-olds and part-time staff are paid less than the London Living Wage (LLW) of £9.40 per hour.

    The Met says the incident at Victoria Station, at Terminus Place, has been "stood down". Local roads and the bus station have reopened.

    Victoria Rail Station is currently closed due to a security alert outside the station. 

    The Met says: "Officers are in attendance at a building site on Terminus Place, SW1 following the discovery of what is believed to be World War Two ordnance."

  6. Scrapping grants to drama school hurts poorer students, say principalspublished at 10:03 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Principals of some of London's top drama schools have said that without grants, poorer students will not be able to get an education there.

    The government announced last year that student maintenance grants would be scrapped from this September and replaced with loans. 

    They say it will not be a barrier to students from different economic backgrounds, but Joanna Read of LAMDA says diversity of students will be affected:

    Some 350 international students at a private London business college have been told they must leave the UK by the end of next month.

    London School of Business and Finance (LSBF) has had its permission to recruit and teach non-EU students revoked, the Home Office has confirmed.

    One student said he feared he would be unable to complete his £8,500 course.

    The college said it would intensify teaching to ensure all students gained their qualifications in time.

    The death of a woman while she was teaching English in China was "a direct result of a leakage of carbon monoxide", a coroner has ruled.

    Francesca Dingley, 22, from north London, died in a Chengdu apartment on 10 February 2015, five days after moving in to the flat.

    Education First, which arranged the accommodation, said steps had been taken to prevent similar tragedies.

    Barnet Coroner Andrew Walker recorded a narrative verdict.

  11. Tube strike talks 'constructive' RMT union sayspublished at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Last-minute talks to avert a strike by Tube station staff have been "detailed and constructive', the RMT union said.

    Transport for London (TfL) has warned that some Tube stations will not open on Sunday and Monday if the strike goes ahead.

    Others may open late or close early, although all trains will run as usual.

    Unless a deal is reached, the RMT has told members working in stations not to work shifts starting between 21:00 tomorrow and 21:00 on Monday.

  12. Delays on the Northern Line due to a faulty trainpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    There are minor delays on Northern Line southbound between Edgware and Euston due to faulty train at Golders Green.

    And on Southeastern and Thameslink trains there are 15 minute delays via Shortlands due to a road accident at the village's rail bridge.

    On Southern trains via East Croydon, there are delays on services heading for the city following an earlier faulty train.

    On the roads, lanes are closed on the M25 anticlockwise between J10 A3 Wisley and J9 Leatherhead as a tyre being changed on a lorry.

    And there are long delays on the A1 Archway Road heading southbound towards the ongoing works and temporary lights at Muswell Hill Road. Traffic is queuing from the A1000 North Hill.

    A collapsed manhole and temporary traffic lights on the A300 Southwark Bridge Road at Sumner Street mean delays are possible between Southwark Street and Southwark Bridge.
