    Residents living close to where a giant sinkhole has opened up in south-east London have been told by police they may have to be evacuated from their homes.

    Cleo O'Kane, 25, who lives opposite where the sinkhole opened up in Woodland Terrace in Charlton, said she heard a "loud bang" around 04:00. 

    She said: "I thought it was thunder - I heard a loud bang, but it was raining so much I thought it was thunder."

    "I woke up and then just went back to sleep - my window was open - then woke up at six this morning, came outside and there was a car in a hole."

    Ms O'Kane said she had lived in the area for eight years, and had never seen anything like this before. 

    She added: "Police said they don't know what's going on. They said the car is stuck on a gas pipe or a water pipe. 

    "All the car is resting on apparently is a pipe, otherwise it would have disappeared."

    A car fell into a giant sinkhole in Charlton this morning, after being left there overnight by a man visiting his brother.

  3. 'The car is fine but the hole is massive'published at 09:00 British Summer Time 12 May 2016

    The brother of the owner of the car which fell into a giant hole in south east London this morning has been speaking to BBC Radio London's Vanessa Feltz.

    The seven-seater Vauxhall Zafira was left on Woodland Terrace in Charlton by Ghazi Hassan, who was visiting his brother Abdul last night.

    Abdul Ahmadzai said his brother had left it there. 

    Abdul said he came out of his house at 04:00 and saw police surrounding a hole in the road. 

    He said: "The car is fine, but the hole is massive. I'm shocked, when I see the hole is there.

    "I'm thanking god no-one had been hurt." 

    Abdul said after waking up and seeing the hole, he thought "There's nothing I can do" and went back to sleep."

    • Commuters are experiencing severe delays on the Docklands Light Railway between Lewisham and West India Quay due to a faulty train at Cutty Sark.
    • Vauxhall Bridge is partly blocked northbound following an accident, with delays back through Vauxhall Cross
    • And there is queuing traffic due to an earlier broken down vehicle on A12 Blackwall Tunnel northern approach southbound near Lochnagar Street with congestion to Bromley By Bow.

    Reporter Barry Caffrey has been speaking to police officers in Woodland Terrace, Charlton, where a car has fallen down a huge hole.

    Officers aren't yet sure what caused the road to collapse but have speculated that it could be linked to recent heavy rainfall.  

    Workers from Thames Water are now on the scene, and the road has been closed by police.

    A car has fallen down a huge hole in a residential street in south-east London.

    Officers discovered a blue people carrier, which had been parked outside Benefice of Charlton St Thomas' Church, in Woodland Terrace, partially in the hole. 

    A police spokesman said no one had been injured in the incident. He added: "Officers are on the scene and there is a cordon in place. The local authority has been called and there are other agencies on scene." 

    The road has been closed due to "subsidence problems", London Buses said.

    Police said they were called at about 03:20 to the street and the car was unattended.

    The road is closed near St Thomas' Church and a diversion is in place for bus route 380.

    A Royal Borough of Greenwich spokesperson said:

    “The Royal Borough of Greenwich is aware of an incident that occurred in Woodland Terrace, Charlton and is working with Emergency Services to secure the area. 

    "We are urgently investigating the matter and will update residents the moment we have more information.”
