Ellie Butler's granddad calls for public inquiry into six-year-old's deathpublished at 08:56 British Summer Time 22 June 2016
The grandfather of murdered six-year-old Ellie Butler has called for a public inquiry into why she was returned to the care of her parents Ben Butler and Jennie Gray.
Neal Gray told BBC Radio 4: "I want it all open above board and I want everybody to answer. Everybody failed Ellie, completely and utterly."
Ellie was placed in the custody of her mother's parents in 2009 after Butler was convicted for shaking Ellie as a baby, but the conviction was later quashed on appeal and the couple then won a High Court judgement to have Ellie returned to their care in 2012.
Ellie died went back to her parents 11 months before her death at the family home in Sutton in October 2013.
Yesterday Butler, 36, was convicted of her murder and jailed for a minimum of 23 years, while Ellie's mother admitted a child cruelty charge and jailed for 42 months.
