    Three-hundred and fifty years ago today a baker's oven caught fire which quickly spread across the city destroying much of Medieval London.

    It took four days to put out the fire that made over 60 000 people homeless. Dr Matthew Green is an author of a history of London called "London, a travel guide through time".

    The 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London is being commemorated with a set of six new stamps.

    The fire raged across the city from 2 to 5 September 1666, destroying more than 13,000 houses and 87 churches.

    The stamps are designed by comic book artist John Higgins, who has used a graphic novel style of illustration.

    They feature scenes from the start, spread and aftermath of the Great Fire, using a street map design.

    Higgins has contributed to titles such as Judge Dredd and 2000 AD.

    Europe's biggest biomedical laboratory, the Francis Crick Institute, opened in London yesterday.

    The £650m building, behind St Pancras station and the British Library, will be home to 1,250 scientists.

    Named after the co-discoverer of DNA structure, the Crick will examine fundamental questions about how illnesses develop, in order to find new ways to treat conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections and diseases of the brain.

    The director of the institute, Sir Paul Nurse, said the Crick would "attract brilliant, bold and creative scientists from the UK and around the world".

    A lack of fluid intake contributed to the death of an 85-year-old man at a home he went to for two weeks' respite care, an inquest has found.

    Des Raj Kapur died in October 2013 after he was found severely dehydrated and barely conscious at the Burroughs Care Home in Hillingdon.

    A representative told West London Coroners Court it could not find records of any fluid and food given.

    His son Deepak Kapur said he was "angry" at his father's treatment.

  13. Snake sex video doctor found guiltypublished at 09:38 British Summer Time 2 September 2016

    A GP has been found guilty of having a stash of pornography, including a video of a man having sex with a snake.

    Cyprian Okoro, 55, from south-west London was found guilty of five counts of possessing extreme pornography and one indecent image of a child.

    The Old Bailey heard the videos were of a "grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise obscene character".

    Okoro was bailed for sentencing on 30 September.

    Some of the five videos featured women having sex with dogs and one woman having sex with a horse.

    Detectives investigating the death of 30-year-old Oliver Dearlove in Blackheath have charged a man.

    Trevor Timon, 31, of Heavitree Road, Woolwich, was charged today with murder and common assault.

    He will appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court later.

    Mr Dearlove, from Eltham, had been in a bar with friends in Montpelier Vale earlier in the night before heading to Tranquil Vale. 

    The relationship manager at Duncan Lawrie Private Bank died in hospital. A post-mortem examination gave the provisional cause of his death as a head injury.

    A 23-year-old man has been charged with causing the deaths of an aspiring child actor and his aunt who were a hit by a car being pursued by police.

    Makayah McDermott and Rozanne Cooper died after the car crashed in Penge, south-east London on Wednesday.

    Joshua Dobby, of no fixed address, will appear at Bromley magistrates' court later.

    Three girls were also treated for non-life threatening injuries but were released from hospital yesterday.

    Cannon Street station has reopened, having been closed since the weekend but South Eastern trains to and from Cannon Street are not stopping at London Bridge for long term works.

    There is no step free access at Shadwell station due faulty lift

    South West trains are running with delays of up to 5 minutes from Portsmouth Harbour into London due to an earlier points problem near Petersfield.

    There are also delays and some cancellations on Southern trains between Victoria and Clapham Junction due to a broken down train.
