    Rail ticket machines cause so much confusion that one-fifth of passengers who use them buy the wrong ticket, according to the rail regulator.

    While 7% of people underpay and could be fined, 13% are paying too much.

    The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) wants train companies to refund passengers who accidently buy tickets which are too expensive for their journey.

    Train operators say plans to simplify fares will help them to give clearer information on ticket machines.

    Commenting on the story about headteacher Mark Keary being suspended from Green Spring Academy amid claims of exam fixing, a Department for Education spokesman said:

    “There is no place for cheating in our schools, and while exam malpractice is extremely rare, it is right that any allegations are thoroughly investigated.

    “Following an investigation at Green Spring Academy in Tower Hamlets, exam malpractice has been identified, resulting in disciplinary action being taken.

    “The Regional Schools Commissioner is working closely with the academy trust to ensure students face as little disruption as possible during this time, and we continue to monitor the situation closely.”

    Mark Keary has been suspended amid claims of exam fixing

    He is principal at Green Spring Academy Shoreditch in East London, and is reportedly paid £220,000 per year.

    Mr Keary was in charge when three girls from the school - formerly Bethnal Green Academy - fled to Syria to join so-called Islamic State in Syria in 2015.

    The Green Spring Education Trust confirmed Mr Keary was among "a number of staff" who have been suspended as part of the investigation.

    A plumber has won a legal battle for working rights in the latest significant court ruling over freelance operations in the modern workplace.

    Garry Smith wanted to reduce his working days at Pimlico Plumbers following a heart attack.

    The Court of Appeal agreed with tribunal that said he was entitled to basic workers' rights although he was technically self-employed.

    The decision is the latest to side with workers in a flexible workforce.

  8. Mayor responds to three cycling deaths in London in four dayspublished at 09:55 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: "Sadiq was saddened to learn of the tragic deaths on London’s roads this week. 

    "His thoughts are with their families and friends. He is determined to make walking and cycling safer and easier for all Londoners. 

    "That's why he's providing more investment in this area than ever before, and has appointed the capital's first ever full-time Walking and Cycling Commissioner to help drive these improvements forward."

    A cyclist died in a collision with a lorry in Silvertown on Thursday. Anita Szucs, 30, died following an apparent hit-and-run in Bounces Road, Enfield on Monday and Karla Roman, 32, died in collision with a coach on Whitechapel High Street, Tower Hamlets, on the same day.

    One of Germany's most senior banking regulators has warned that London will probably lose its role as the "gateway to Europe", because of the planned hard Brexit.

    Dr Andreas Dombret, executive board member for the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank adds: "The EU will not engage in a regulatory race to the bottom."

  12. Man arrested on suspicion of fundraising for overseas terrorismpublished at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2017

    A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Norfolk on suspicion of terrorism offences. 

    Two addresses in the county were searched and the arrest relates to suspected activities overseas, police said.

    The man is being held in London on suspicion of fundraising for the purposes of terrorism and is also suspected of encouraging support for a banned terror group, a spokesman said. 

    Detectives from the Met Police's Counter Terrorism Command arrested the man yesterday morning, but they have declined to say where the searches took place. 

    Scotland Yard said an address in north London was also searched.
