    Dany Cotton - London's first female Fire Commissioner - wants more women to join the brigade to help it become more diverse.

    The 47-year-old would like to see an increase of female operational staff from 7% to 18%.

    "I want the brigade to truly reflect the city that we serve and that means more women firefighters but also more applicants from London's diverse communities and cultures. "Modern firefighting is a varied role, with numerous career paths from investigating fires to specialist rescue and dealing with hazardous materials but also community work to stop fires breaking out in the first place. "If you don't like the idea of a desk job but like meeting people, pushing yourself, being part of a team and working in the community, you should really think about joining us."

    The #GiveUpYourGun campaign is the latest drive to bring down gun crime in London.

    It gives Londoners the opportunity to safely dispose of firearms, imitation weapons and ammunition by handing them in at police stations. 

    Those who hand in any weapons won't have to give their details to police.

    A male pedestrian has died in east London after being involved in a collision with a truck just after 09:15.

    The incident happened on Commercial Road, near the junction with Caroline Street, in Whitechapel.

    The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and road closures and diversions are in place.

    Housing Minister Gavin Barwell said there would be minimum tenancies and more homes built for rent in a "change of tone" from previous Tory policy.  

    He said the government had not given up making home ownership available to all.

    Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the rental market was "incapable of giving people the security they need".

    Speaking on the BBC's Sunday Politics, Housing Minister Gavin Barwell said a package of measures would be in the White Paper due to be published tomorrow.

    The biggest ever retrospective of the work of David Hockney will trace his development from a student in the 1960s to one of Britain's greatest living artists. 

    The exhibition at the Tate Britain, external will feature more than 250 pieces of artwork to celebrate his achievement in painting, drawing, photography and video. 

    Hockney, 79, revisited works he created decades ago for the show and said: "Many of them seem like old friends to me now." 

    The chronological overview will trace his development from his first appearance on the public stage in 1961, through his works of the 1960s and 1970s to his recent shows at the Royal Academy. 

    The exhibition opens on Thursday until 29 May.

    A female cyclist believed to be in her thirties is fighting for life after a collision with a coach on Whitechapel High Street this morning .

    Police and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene and found the female cyclist suffering from what the Met said were life-threatening injuries. She was taken to an an east London hospital where she remains in a critical condition. 

    The driver of the bus stopped at the scene.No arrests have been made. 

    There are road closures and diversions in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

    One eye witness, Gulam Shadat Vavo, said the cyclist tried to overtake the bus before the collision.

    In December Stefano Brizzi, from south London, admitted dismembering PC Gordon Semple, 59, while high on crystal meth.

    The 50-year-old claimed PC Semple died accidentally during a sex game but an Old Bailey jury found him guilty of murder.

    He was ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years in jail.

    The Italian national claimed PC Semple, who was on duty at the time, had died on 1 April during a "sex game gone wrong" when a dog leash he was wearing had slipped.

    However, the court heard it would have taken far longer for him to be strangled than Brizzi's account suggested.
