We had to literally run under police riot shields because of the amount of flaming debris, just to get into the building. There was one small staircase that everyone was going up. It was just like the images of 9/11."

  7. Grenfell Tower fire: Harley Facades statementpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

    Bob Dale
    BBC Live reporter

Harley Facades Limited, based in Crowborough in East Sussex, says it completed the refurbishment work to Grenfell Tower.

It says this included the installation of exterior cladding.

Harley Facades says it doesn't manufacture the Aluminium Composite Material panels itself, which it says are commonly used in the refurbishment industry.

    Quote Message

This is an incredibly tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the residents and their families who have suffered such a personal loss. We will fully support and cooperate with the investigations into this fire. At this time, we are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding to the tower."

    Quote Message

There will be many questions about this whole incident and so you will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for us to comment or for others to speculate on any aspect of (the) fire or its causes in advance of these inquiries. At this time, we are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding to the tower.”

Some residents say they repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of the Grenfell Tower, including during a major recent refurbishment.

Nick Paget-Brown, the leader of Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council, confirmed at the press confernce a short time ago that it had been contacted about the works, but said it was too early to say whether any of the complaints were relevant to the blaze.

    He went on:

    Quote Message

Now clearly when you do that, there are difficulties, problems, complaints, logistics to resolve. And it is undoubtedly the case that the council received some complaints about the way the work was being conducted.

    Quote Message

But we will need to look much more closely at how much of that corresponds to the cause of today's fire."

  11. Tensions growing among crowds close to towerpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

Crowds outside Rugby Portobello Community Centre

A bit more from the BBC's Claire Heald, close to the scene of the fire. Scuffles broke out outside the emergency centre on Walmar Road and police struggled to contain a surging crowd.

A woman was shrieking and there were some large thuds heard.

It's not clear what the disagreement was about.

But people have been waiting for hours for news. And alongside them stand reporters and crews talking to the community.

Police have moved back the cordon around the site, and the crowd and the press are now separated by the road.

  13. Some people are really angry and demanding answerspublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

The BBC's Claire Heald, at the scene

People have been standing out here for hours, waiting for news.

The personnel have changed - people come and go, visit the emergency centre for help and information, leave or arrive in tears. But the crowd itself shows no sign of reducing.

On the pavement outside the Rugby Portobello emergency centre , a well-intended pile of water bottles, duvets, food, clothes, random toys and games sprawls.

Red Cross staff struggle to sort it as kind commuters add to it now - foil-pouches of squash, blankets, cola. Some bring homemade sandwiches.

The collection is off to a nearby Westway rescue centre, where people who have lost, or been evacuated from their homes, might spend the night.

Fire crews are fewer, police remain in force. The local MP has been. NHS workers, counsellors, volunteers come and go.

You hear snatched conversations - who is missing, who has news? And wails and crying.

I talked to carers who worked in the tower - and were swapping anecdotes about the clients with limited mobility, agrophobia even, or multiple children who they know would have struggled to manage escape.

Some are really angry and have questions - whether they're talking about inequality in London's richest borough, or cladding and fire stairs.

It's very warm. All day the sun has shone in clear blue skies - save for a plume of smoke, decreasing but persisting, from Grenfell Tower.

  15. 'Pockets of fire' still burningpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

Addressing where the operation will go from here, London Fire Brigade's Director of Safety & Assurance Steve Apter says: "We're still fighting the fire - the investigation's in its very preliminary stages."

The service is using drones to help assess the integrity of the building, so the fire service can plan its next steps, he tells reporters.

Mr Apter says there are "still pockets of fire yet to be extinguished in places particularly difficult to reach".

A limited crew are inside the building due to the risk to their safety. Their progress was hampered by a fractured gas main, which the safety director says "created quite a significant hazard".

He says any lessons learned from this incident will be borne out not just in London, but across the UK, and globally.
