    Grenfell Tower had received a fire risk assessment in June 2016 immediately after a £10m refurbishment was carried out, the BBC has learned.

    The tower block was assessed as being a "medium" fire risk, defined as presenting a normal fire risk. Residents however had raised a number of concerns about the risk of fire for a number of years beforehand.

    An exploding fridge, and the cladding which was added to the facade of Grenfell Tower during a refurbishment a year ago, have both being cited by a number of residents as possible causes of the fire.

    However, the London Fire Brigade has stressed it does not know the cause of the fire at this stage.

    London Fire Brigade Commissioner Dany Cotton said it would be " wrong for us to speculate over cause at this moment".

    "We will continue to look at the cause of the fire and investigate what happened."

    Stuart Cundy, of the Metropolitan Police, has urged members of the public to keep away from the area.

    He said there were a significant number of police officers in the locality, describing the situation as "very dynamic" and "truly shocking".

    "Any concerns about anybody connected to this awful event, please phone the casualty bureau - 0800 0961 233."

    The London Ambulance Service's Paul Woodrow said his "thoughts with everyone affected by this tragic event".

    Mr Woodrow said they were continuing to work closely with the London Fire Brigade and the police to ensure patients "get the treatment they need and are conveyed to hospital as quickly as possible".

    St Clements Church in Kensington opened around 03:00 BST and since then, according to Reverend Alan Everett, hundreds of people have come through its doors.

    "People are acutely distressed. My main effort is to provide water, breakfast, tea and coffee and a toilet.

    "We're planning for the rest of the day. We're providing lunch and supper and if necessary we're providing a place to stay overnight."

    He also said local people had been "incredibly generous" in bringing supplies to those affected but said for anyone thinking of donating, blankets were "always useful".

    London Fire Brigade commander Dany Cotton says this is a "very serious and complex fire" that has involved, at its peak, 200 firefighters and 40 fire engines.

    She also says a structural engineer is monitoring the stability of the building, and at the moment the building is safe to work in.

    She also described this as a "really terrible incident".

    Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, has said normal fire procedures were not possible to follow in the Grenfell Tower fire.

    He explained that normally firefighters would work from the inside out but in this case they had not been able to do so. He said it was "shocking" that a fire in a tower block was able to take hold in this way.
