In Barnet, former Labour councillor Adam Langleben voiced his anger at the impact which the row over anti-Semitism had on his party's fortunes.

After losing his seat in West Hendon, Mr Langleben tweeted: "We must NEVER have another election like this. No community group should have their vote dictated by their safety. That should shame us."

He won support from Labour MP and Corbyn critic Wes Streeting, who told him: "I am so so sorry. This defeat wasn't yours."

Conservative chairman Brandon Lewis said voters were being turned off by "hard abuse from some of the hard left".

He said Labour "clearly have got" a problem with anti-Semitism which they "are just not dealing with".

  4. Analysis: Brexit hangs over all our politicspublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    BBC News Channel

    Norman Smith

The BBC’s assistant political editor, Norman Smith, says broadly speaking the Conservatives are losing out in Remain areas and Labour are losing out in Brexit areas.

Brexit is still the "huge cloud" that hangs over all our politics including local elections, he tells us.

He stresses the Conservatives have come through the night largely unscathed, despite a significant loss in Trafford.

For Labour, he adds, there will be questions over whether the high water mark of Corbynism has been reached.

Of the results declared so far, the only councils to change are Richmond-upon-Thames and Barnet.

Richmond-upon-Thames was regained by the Liberal Democrats after eight years while the Conservatives won Barnet, which no party previously had control of.

Labour increased its number of councillors across London, but has failed to take control of any new councils including key targets such as Wandsworth, Westminster, and Kensington and Chelsea.

    Barry John Rawlings

Labour group leader in Barnet Barry John Rawlings told BBC Radio London that antisemitism played “the biggest part” in Labour’s “defeat”.

The Conservative leader of Barnet Council leader said voters were more concerned about "local issues" than with accusations of anti-Semitism within Labour.

Richard Cornelius told the Press Association: "They are all basic issues. It's things like potholes, the collection of their rubbish bins and keeping the council tax low.

"Of course there is a concern about anti-Semitism in the Jewish areas, and of course there is a wider concern about it more generally.

"People are horrified, and Labour have to address that."

  15. Barnet should have been 'easy plum'published at 07:58 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Electoral expert Professor Sir John Curtice says the Barnet result means Labour is going to go away empty handed in terms of winning control of London councils. Barnet had looked like a "relatively easy plum" for Labour, he tells the Today programme. The fact the Conservatives won it might fuel continued argument in Labour about what it does about anti-Semitism, because Barnet has the largest Jewish population in the UK, he says.
