Eating a Mediterranean diet may help prevent depression, research in London suggests.

But an expert in metabolic medicine says more rigorous, targeted trials are needed to confirm evidence of the potential link.

The findings, in Molecular Psychiatry, external, come from a review of 41 studies published within the last eight years.

A plant-based diet of fruit, veg, grains, fish, nuts and olive oil - but not too much meat or dairy - appeared to have benefits in terms of mood.

Experts say trials are now needed to test the theory and to learn whether depression can be treated with diet.

Dr Camille Lasalle, who carried out the analysis with colleagues at University College London, said the evidence so far pointed to the idea that the foods we eat can make a difference in lowering our risk of depression, even though there is no solid clinical proof yet.

  14. Croydon needs to save £26m by 2022 to balance bookspublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 26 September 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Croydon Council needs to find £26m in savings in the next four years to balance its books.

The council’s cabinet agreed on a Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) last night which sets out sets out the financial outlook of the council over the next four years.

Cabinet member for finances and resources Cllr Simon Hall said: “In Croydon, we have a fast-growing population with all its benefits but in terms of balancing the books, it provides challenges.”

He said financial pressures on the council include funding adult social care and children’s services.

The department was put into special measures last year after it was rated inadequate so the council is now putting an extra £17m into children’s services this year.

The strategy assumes this funding will continue.

Cllr Hall said: “The assumptions we’ve had to make are, to a degree, being drawn up in a vacuum in the end there are no concrete plans beyond April 2020 in terms of how local government will be funded.

“For example with council tax we have made the assumption that taxation for local services will rise by 2% every year and there will continue to be an adult social care precept given the large demands in this area.

“What this does result in is over the four year period is we need to find £26m of savings or additional income to balance the books.” This MTFS assumes Council Tax will increase by a total of 4% in 2019/20.
