The Wembley deal is off, Fulham owner Shahid Khan has withdrawn his £600m offer, which would have resulted in a big investment in the lower levels of football in England.

"I think it's a massive concern that it's off," said Mark Palios, a former chief executive of the FA and current chairman of Tranmere Rovers.

"It's the biggest issue that faces the FA at this point in time - that is the state of grass roots football within the country. That's despite the fact that over the last 18 years there's been roughly about a million pounds a week being put into the game. But it's still in a parlous state."

A well-known theatre in south London which was closed for a £30m refurbishment will not be fully open until September 2019 at the earliest - 15 months later than originally planned.

Fairfield Halls in Croydon shut in July 2016 and was initially scheduled by Croydon Council to re-open in the summer of 2016.

Croydon Council's creative director Paula Murray explained delays in the work were to blame for the latest push back.

She said: “We were hoping that it would be open by the end of 2018 but the scale of uniqueness of Fairfield meant it has had to be a completely bespoke refurbishment.

“It has been a very complex project, there was a lot of asbestos in there, as there was in every building of that age, so we have to get every bit out."

On Friday, Cllr Oliver Lewis told BBC Radio London that £30m had been put into the refurbishment - however the "true cost" of the project won't be known until the end.

Rokhsana Fiaz, the mayor of Newham, took over from Sir Robin Wales following May's local elections.

She has agreed to delegate executive decision making to her cabinet of senior councillors.

Ms Fiaz said: "This scheme of delegation essentially moves all the decision making that is held by one person, me, to the entire cabinet, which includes six members.
