Today marks 50 years since the Beatles played their last ever gig - on a rooftop in Savile Row on a cold Thursday lunchtime.

On 30 January 1969, the Fab Four and keyboardist Billy Preston headed outside with a film crew at their central London headquarters for 42 minutes, playing hits including Get Back, Don’t Let Me Down and I’ve Got A Feeling.

The noise from the performance attracted both workers on their lunchtime, as well as the police.

Former Met officer Ken Wharfe, was on duty in Piccadilly Circus at the time when he was ordered to head to the building to get the band to turn the noise down.

He previously told the BBC he "was amazed at just how many people were just standing on roof tops away beyond Bond Street, over by the Royal Academy."

“I think any member of the police that had tried to stop this concert would have been launched from the roof, quite frankly.”

The footage, external, which includes Ringo Starr wearing his wife's bright orange coat to keep warm and John Lennon telling fans "I'd like to say, 'thank you' on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition!", was used in the 1970 documentary film Let it Be.

These days, you're unlikely to come across any surprise rooftop concerts if you're near 3 Savile Row - the building is now an upmarket children's clothes store.

  3. Barclays 'cannot wait any longer'published at 16:37 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2019

Barclays is preparing to move £166bn worth of assets from London to its Irish division, a High Court judgement has revealed.

The reason for this is that the bank is concerned that City financial services firms could lose their special "passporting" rights that enable them to provide services across Europe, in the event that a no-deal Brexit comes to pass.

"Due to the continuing uncertainty over whether there might be a 'no-deal' Brexit, the Barclays Group has determined that it cannot wait any longer to implement the scheme," the judgement says.

"The overriding requirement, however, is that Barclays Bank Ireland must be legally and operationally ready to conduct all relevant regulated business with the in-scope clients by no later than 29 March 2019, which is the date currently set for Brexit."
