The Design Museum is set to host an exhibition, external featuring "selfies" created by a robot.

Named after the pioneering female scientist Ada Lovelace, Ai-Da uses AI algorithms to make art, turning the subject of self-portraiture on its head by creating "selfies" of someone who doesn't have a self.

Her robotic arm, developed by Salah Al Abd and Ziad Abass, enables her to hold a pencil, and her silicone face, designed by researcher Lucy Seal, digital artist Alex Kafousssias and 3D designer Tim Milward, makes it appear as though she is "alive".

Transport for London (TfL) has secured another short-term extension of its government bailout as negotiations on a longer deal continue, the authority announced.

The agreement ensures the continuation of public transport in the capital until 28 May.

The collapse in passenger numbers during the coronavirus pandemic has decimated TfL's finances, and it has needed government funding to keep services running.

A TfL spokesman said: "We continue to discuss our funding requirements with the government and hope these discussions can be concluded successfully soon, to enable a strong and robust recovery from the pandemic."

A Department for Transport (DfT) spokesman said it was rolling over the contract on the same terms while a long term deal is being reached.

The latest DfT figures show passenger numbers on TfL's Tube and bus services last week were at 35% and 60% of pre-pandemic levels respectively.

Ben Freedman, founder of Prince Charles CinemaImage source, PA Media

The founder of a London cinema says it will have to operate at close to maximum capacity in order to continue to break even despite coronavirus restrictions being eased.

Ben Freedman said the Prince Charles Cinema in Soho had "arrived in one piece, slightly bruised but raring to go" as it reopened to the public on Monday.

"When you love movies as much as we do, to not be able to show them to people for so long is pretty horrible and really the mood lifted as soon as we started to aim towards today, which was a couple of months ago."

He said the public are "really desperate" to be able to return to cinemas and his venue has not been heavily impacted by disruption to the film release schedule because they show classic movies as well as new ones.

Chains including Vue, Odeon, Curzon and Everyman have also reopened their cinemas, while Cineworld will begin doing so from Wednesday.

The Mousetrap set has been fumigated ahead of re-opening

After being dark for 14 months, West End theatres are finally starting to reopen.

Ahead of tonight's first show for more than a year, the set and stage at The Mousetrap, the West End’s longest running play, are being fumigated.

"We are sold out for the next few weeks, so there's clearly an appetite to come back to the theatre," said the show's producer, Adam Spiegel.

"Obviously we are operating with social distancing, so we have a reduced capacity, but my sense is that people want to get back out."

The counter in the foyer will greet the audience for the 28,200th performance - it had been stuck on 28,199 since March 2020.
