Grenfell Tower can be seen from parts of the parade route and this was a community devastated by the disaster.

In 2018, carnival held a 72 second silence on both days at 15:00, one second for each life lost in the fire.

I’ve just heard that this is planned to happen again this afternoon, as sound systems will fall silent in respect of the victims, survivors and the bereaved.

“We’re playing a bit of everything from soul to reggae, R&B, a little bit of jungle and house. A lot of party music,” he says.

His dad began the sound system at Carnival in the late 80s and Riper Don has been here since 1993, taking over from his dad since the late 2000s.

“It’s going to be a good day,” he adds.

I’m on board a Windrush-themed bus travelling up Ladbroke Grove which marks the 75th anniversary of the docking of HMT Empire Windrush, carrying passengers from the Caribbean to the UK.

Wearing a colourful hat with the number 75, Deborah Klass says this is a very special moment for her.

“I am here celebrating a piece of my mum and dad who came over as part of the Windrush generation,” she tells me.

Her dad passed away but “would be so proud I’m here representing the achievements and diverse legacy of the Windrush generation".

A Windrush themed double-decker bus is running at the Notting Hill Carnival to mark the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush.

The bus is part of the Transport for London (TfL) float during the parade, and features artwork from the artist Baraka Carberry.

The wrap around the bus visually entwines the culture, community and colours of the carnival and the 75-year history of Windrush, TfL said.

After the parade, the bus will also run during Black History Month in October.

I was here reporting on children’s day yesterday and now I’m back at the heart of the action to bring you "access all areas" coverage of the main event!

Yesterday thousands of kids dressed up flamboyantly with their families, I tried the delicious jerk chicken and we danced along to Idris Elba’s DJ’ing. I even bumped into Dizzee Rascal.

I left with paint peeling off my arms, my ears ringing from the overwhelming sound and my belly full of tasty food, so the bar is high for today.

Let's have a quick look on the latest travel advice for those trying to travel to west London today.

There are severe delays on the Hammersmith & City and District lines and minor delays on the Circle line due to an earlier customer incident. The Central line has a good service so the best stations to get to the carnival are Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park.

But, TfL advises that between 11:00 and 15:00, both Notting Hill Gate and Holland Park will be exit only.

On its website TfL adds: "If travelling from east London to the carnival, it may be easier to use Elizabeth line services from Stratford to Paddington and continue at street level.

"If travelling from west London to the carnival, it may be easier to alight at Shepherds Bush and continue at street level."

  13. Carnival reaches its climax - but what can we expect today?published at 11:16 British Summer Time 28 August 2023

Today is billed as the adult parade so we can expect plenty of loud whistles, sound systems and bursts of colour in Notting Hill.

Colourfully-costumed mass bands are filling the streets of Notting Hill, ready to wind their way through west London.

The annual celebration of Caribbean culture and history will bring lots of dancing, parading and partying today, with numerous food stalls also lining the pavements.

Floats are already blaring music while feathered and bejewelled revellers add the final touches to their outfits.
