  1. Tony Martin 'held over gun possession'published at 14:49

    The BBC understands that the 71-year-old man arrested earlier today in Wisbech on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm is Tony Martin.

    Mr Martin was jailed for life in April 2000 for the murder of 16-year-old Fred Barras, who died of gunshot wounds during a burglary at Mr Martin's isolated Victorian farmhouse in Emneth Hungate, and for wounding his accomplice Brendon Fearon, 29.

    Mr Martin’s murder conviction was later reduced to manslaughter, and he was released from jail in 2003.

    A 71-year-old Norfolk man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm.

    The BBC understands the man arrested is the farmer Tony Martin who was jailed for shooting dead a teenage burglar in 1999.

    Officers arrested the man this morning in the Wisbech area of Cambridgeshire and a police search of a property just over the border in Norfolk is under way. He remains in police custody.

    An eyewitness has reported seeing 15 or more police vehicles, a helicopter and armed officers at Emneth Hungate, near Wisbech, where police have been searching a property this lunchtime.

    A 71-year-old man was arrested in Wisbech on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm this morning, according to Norfolk Police.

    The eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said: "It was as if the US president had come to visit."

    Norfolk Police says a 71-year-old man was arrested in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, this morning, on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm.  

    He remains in police custody.

    Police are currently searching a property in Emneth Hungate, across the border in Norfolk. More details to follow.

  6. Recognition for chief executive of musical therapy charitypublished at 12:42

    The chief executive of a Norwich-based charity that provides helps to families with children with disabilities has been made an MBE in recognition of her work.

    Sally Eastick helped set up Musical Keys, external 25 years ago, starting with weekly musical therapy sessions for young people.

    The charity is now used by Norfolk County Council to run holiday play schemes for disabled children.    

  7. Norfolk's newest knight loves his jobpublished at 12:11

    The MP for North West Norfolk, Henry Bellingham, has been knighted for his services to politics.

    The former Foreign Officer minister says wasn't expecting the honour, and hadn't gone into politics to receive any accolade.

  8. Christmas trees needed for sea defencespublished at 11:34

    An action group is appealing for people to bring their old Christmas trees to help form natural sea defences.

    The Save Hemsby's Coastline, external group says the trees will be half-buried, trapping sand around them to encourage other vegetation to grow.

    Neil Brown says a "tree re-homing centre" will remain open until 10 January, and then work will begin to install the trees in the dunes.

    A Neatishead woman is to receive a British Empire Medal for her services to former Far East Prisoners of War, external.

    Pauline Simpson, who is chaplain to FEPOW, looks after the welfare of former prisoners and their wives and widows, and arranges two reunions each year.

    Earlier this year, the Queen attended ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of VJ Day, which Mrs Simpson had helped organise.

    The victim of a sexual assault last New Year's Eve in Norwich says people need a safety plan if they're going out tonight.

    A woman who led a team of volunteers to set up an arts centre in an empty building says she's "delighted and really proud of her team", after she was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year's Honours list.

    Rebecca Lyne, 41, of Diss, who works with social services and gives up her weekends to run arts sessions for male carers and children's groups, says she didn't expect her name to be on the New Year's Honours list .
