    An elderly couple from north Norfolk say they have racked up mobile phone debts of £200 since their landline phone was cut off by a fault on 1 December.

    Plusnet, which provides phone and internet services to 84-year-old John Marks and his wife in Beeston Regis, has told the couple the service will be back on by 25 January. 

    The company said the repair required more specialised works because of utility cables near to the fault. It has apologised to the couple and promised to reimburse them.

    A school has been placed in special measures after an "inadequate" Ofsted report.

    When inspectors visited Acle Academy, external at the beginning of December, they found standards to be "inadequate" in a number of areas and said not enough had been done to address the decline in the quality of teaching.

    The school had been rated as "good" two years ago.

  4. Stephen Fry 'happy to relinquish' board seat to become ambassadorpublished at 11:37

    Actor, writer and television presenter Stephen Fry has stepped down from the board of Norwich City Football Club, having held the role since 2010.

    Fry, who has a home in Norfolk and is a lifelong fan of The Canaries, will continue to support the club as a Norwich City ambassador.  

    He said: "Now I'm so happy to relinquish my seat on the board... to engage as fully as I can in the role of ambassador for Norwich City. We have so much to proud of, both on and off the pitch. On the Ball, City!"

  5. Wayne Hemingway part of housing design teampublished at 11:07

    We heard earlier from the designer Wayne Hemingway, who says the government's promise of £140m to replace Britain's most run-down council estates won't be enough to tackle the problem.

    He was in King's Lynn to see the completion of the second phase of the revamp of Hillington Square.

    Mr Hemingway and his wife Geraldine are part of the design team for Freebridge Community Housing, which is spending £30m on the run-down 1960s complex, giving it a new lease of life.

    A community leader in Norwich says £140m of government money to rebuild some of the country's most troubled housing estates isn't enough.

    Steve Burnham, the former head of the Community Association on the Mile Cross estate in Norwich, says it won't necessarily improve things.

  7. Aviation Academy 'to address skills shortage'published at 10:02

    MPs have been told that a new training centre at Norwich Airport will play an important role in addressing a nationwide skills shortage in the aviation industry.

    The Norwich Aviation Academy, external will be the only place in the country to offer a specialised degree in aviation engineering.

    Simon Witts, the head of the aviation skills partnership, says each year the new academy will turn out 80 engineers who are "able to go straight into jobs with the world's airlines".

    The designer Wayne Hemingway says the government's plans to improve council estates is a good start, but more is needed.

    He was speaking at the official launch of the latest stage of the revamp of Hillington Square in King's Lynn last night.

    Hemingway (pictured right) says there is a national housing need, but the government's £140m won't go very far "considering the first two phases of the Hillington Square makeover cost £12m".

    Cromer's boxing twins Liam and Ryan Walsh are targetting a place in the spotlight this year. 

    Ryan defends his British Featherweight title against Darren Traynor at the York Hall Bethnel Green on Friday night, while Liam is British Super Featherweight Champion and will make his return after a hand operation in the spring.

  10. Patients 'kept out of A&E thanks to 999 trial'published at 08:47

    The ambulance service says it managed to keep hundreds of people out of Accident and Emergency last month, thanks to a trial which has seen doctors working in the 999 control room.

    The doctors have been giving ambulance crews additional advice over the phone, as part of the trial which started in July.

    The East of England Ambulance Trust, external says the support service was used more than 1,500 times in December, with 85% of cases resulting in alternatives to A&E admissions being found.

  11. Delia's nephew joins Norwich City boardpublished at 08:31

    Stephen Fry is stepping down from Norwich City's board of directors and will be replaced by Thomas Smith, the nephew of Delia Smith. 

    The 35-year old is described by the club as a "lifelong fan" and is often seen at games sitting alongside his aunt and uncle, who are The Canaries' joint majority shareholders.

    Stephen Fry becomes an ambassador of the club. His filming commitments made it difficult for him to attend board meetings.
