A charter plane, reportedly carrying Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, skidded off the runway at Norwich Airport after the pilot lined up with the wrong set of lights.

A report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, external (AAIB) states the crew believed the lights they could see were the runway's centre lights, but they were actually highlighting its left edge.

Soon after the plane began accelerating, it "veered rapidly to the left" and went on to grass next to the runway, causing the pilot to abort the take-off.  

Three passengers and two crew were on board the Citation CJ2 light jet when the accident happened on 9 January.  Kompany was said to be among the passengers.  

Manchester City had earlier played Norwich City at Carrow Road, beating the Canaries 3-0.

I've been to Crown Road in Great Yarmouth following reports the road was closed after a sinkhole opened up - I thought you might like to see these pictures: 

Matthew Goodswen, who'd turned up to fit a window when the hole opened up, told me it looked like a pothole at first, but gradually got bigger and bigger. 

The police turned up, he said, and one of the policemen "grabbed a bit of tarmac and pulled it out the hole... they looked worried and another police car turned up... and they're sitting there waiting for Highways to turn up." 

Mr Goodswen said it was "a big drama for a little hole."

Labour, UKIP and Green members of Norfolk County Council, external have condemned the consultation currently under way into East Anglian devolution claiming that it isn't even-handed.

Labour councillor Steve Morphew said the information contained in the document was "pretty inadequate" while another, Andrew Boswell for the Greens complained that the document looked "more like an advert than a consultation".

Independent councillor Richard Bird said: "I think we are hoodwinking the public".

But Conservative council leader Cliff Jordan insisted that the material in the leaflet was not biased.

Michael Maitland says he's now well and happy, but admits that it's taken years: "It takes a long time to overcome something as bad as that and I obviously still have to keep fighting it and working on it every day.

"It's definitely not quick fix if you're that deep in it".

His father Iain added that he's very proud of how Michael has turned his life around, saying: "Only this week he was saying he's started an apprenticeship - onwards and upwards."

Iain Maitland, who lives in Felixstowe, says for a long time they ignored the changes when their son Michael, who had developed anorexia, came back from university.

He said: "Michael did get thinner and for a long time we ignored it.

"We just thought it was him growing up and changing the colour of his hair and I think Michael didn't want us to know he was depressed and becoming anorexic.

"We were always a very happy, normal, jolly family and then suddenly to find this terrible thing, anorexia, to the point where he was ending up in hospital and rehab, was so far beyond the realms of what we'd ever known or could have expected that we just didn't believe it was happening to us."

A Felixstowe man who developed depression and almost died of anorexia while he was at the University of East Anglia in Norwich says there was no "set reason" why it happened. 

Michael Maitland (pictured) said: "There was just a gradual process and I wasn't even aware of it at first. I never had a problem with how I looked or anything like that. I think it was more a mood thing."

Correspondence between Michael and his father Iain Maitland is now being published in a book called Dear Michael, Love Dad.

Speaking about the letters, Michael added: "I'd read them at first in the beginning stages, but towards the end I was getting really depressed ... I just ignored my dad."

Fire crews have been damping down after a blaze at a recycling centre in Thurlton near Loddon.

It started at about 20:00 yesterday, and had 50 firefighters dealing with it at its peak.

The correspondence between a Felixstowe man and his son, who was at university in Norfolk and suffering from severe depression and anorexia, has formed the basis of a book which is being published later this week.

Iain Maitland says: "When Michael went to university I started writing letters and later emails, just full of stuff and nonsense about things that were happening at home, making jokes and of course whilst that was all happening Michael was falling into depression and anorexia.

"There was lots of me shouting at him and 'when are you going to get a job' and 'you know how much all this is costing us' and things like that, and whilst that was happening, Michael was sinking lower and lower."

An empty canoe has prompted a sea search off the north Norfolk coast today. 

The two-man craft, which is mustard-coloured on top and white underneath, was found on Holkham Beach. 

Coastguards say they don't know if anyone is missing or whether they have simply left their boat on the beach.

Members of Norfolk County Council have voted overwhelmingly to accept 50 Syrian refugees into the county.

A full meeting of the council voted 64 votes to six, with one absentention, to take part in the government's Syrian Vulnerable Person's Resettlement Scheme, external which will see refugees settled in the Norwich area.

The scheme gives priority to survivors of torture and violence, women and children and risk, and those in medical need.

It's part of the government's initiative to accept up to 20,000 Syrian refugees from camps around Syria over the next five years.

Norfolk Police have said more CCTV footage has been gathered following Wednesday's attack and suspected attempted abduction of a serviceman outside RAF Marham.

Officers are seeking a dark-coloured people carrier which the two attackers were using.

Det Supt Paul Durham renewed an appeal for any dashcam footage recorded by motorists who were in the Swaffham area.

"CCTV footage continues to be gathered and reviewed, while follow-up enquiries are being made after calls put in to the hotlines," he said.

"Tracing the vehicle remains a priority and I would like to re-emphasise that we do believe it may have contained more than the two suspects seen by the victim. 

"This is important because I do not want to deter any potential witnesses from coming forward - it is the vehicle we are interested in, regardless of the number of people seen inside.”

Norfolk Police admit the suspect who grabbed the British serviceman while he was out jogging near RAF Marham may not have visible injuries.

The victim has told police he managed to head-butt and punch his attacker last Wednesday, with the attacker then making off with at least one accomplice in a van.

Det Supt Paul Durham said: "Clearly the extent of his injuries is unknown however we do not believe either attack caused the suspect to bleed, contrary to reports circulating in the media."

Norfolk Police have released more details, external about the suspects who attacked a serviceman at RAF Marham in what is believed to have been an attempted abduction on Wednesday.

Two men, described as being of middle eastern appearance, were seen by the victim, who fought off one of them before escaping.

Det Supt Paul Durham said: "The victim managed to fight off his attacker and head-butted him, we believe around the eye-socket, so it is possible he suffered swelling and bruising in this area.

"He was then punched which caused him to fall to the ground.

"If you know someone who matches the description of our suspect, who has a similar injury, then I would urge you to contact my officers.”
