  8. Closing public toilets 'won't be pleasant'published at 10:36 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    Sarah Jenkins
    BBC Local Live

One of the toilet blocks in The Walks in King's Lynn could be closed, after an hour-long debate about cuts to the budget for public conveniences last night.

The council's environment panel was considering closures at three sites: Old Hunstanton, Gaywood and the Howdale in Downham Market.

Councillors had objections to closing Old Hunstanton because it serves a major tourist area, and Gaywood because it's a shopping centre.

A compromise of keeping Gaywood and closing one of the toilets in the Walks instead received support.

But local councillor Mike Taylor said the closure could lead to greater problems.

"When I was in the Walks the other day, I counted hundreds of people around," he said.

"If there is only one toilet, the inevitable is going to happen.

"You're going to get more people urinating in public, more offences disclosed, it won't be very pleasant."

Charlie Graham-Wood, pictured left, an estate agent and volunteer for the RNLI at Sheringham, and lifeboatman Lewis Gray had spent six months training for the crossing, which should have taken place in September.

Weather conditions prevented that, and there was another window of opportunity identified for this month, but again the pair have been thwarted by the weather, external.

"This time it will be harder, as we'll be training during the winter, when conditions will be colder."

They're hoping the challenge, 23 miles from Dungeness to Boulogne, will now take place in either April or May.
