    A third man has been charged after four people were splashed with what police described as a "noxious substance" while they were outside McDonald's in Northampton town centre.

    Two men had already been charged and the third man was arrested on Saturday.

    They have all been charged with four counts of administering a noxious substance and are next due to appear at the town's crown court on 23 August.

    Police said the victims were splashed with the substance, which was not thought to be acid, at about 04:45 on Saturday, 23 July on the Drapery.

    A few isolated showers across the BBC East region this evening, but these will die away to leave much of the night dry with clear spells, and perhaps a few mist patches forming.

    Southwesterly winds will ease overnight, with temperatures falling to 10C (50F) in the countryside.

    After a dry and bright start to Tuesday, increasing cloud will bring a few scattered showers from the southwest, some heavy with perhaps hail and thunder, but interspersed with sunshine.

  5. Passchendaele: Ceremony honours 'bravery'published at 15:45 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    The "courage and bravery" of those who fought in one of the bloodiest battles of World War One has been remembered, 100 years after it began.

    Prince Charles, Prince William and Prime Minister Theresa May were among those who paid tribute to those who died in the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium.

    Some 4,000 relatives attended the ceremony at Tyne Cot cemetery, Ypres.

    In the three months of fighting, half a million Allied and German soldiers were killed, wounded or went missing.

    Prince Charles addressed the service, saying: "We remember it not only for the rain that fell, the mud that weighed down the living and swallowed the dead, but also for the courage and bravery of the men who fought here."

    The conflict - officially known as the Third Battle of Ypres - was fought from 31 July 1917 until November that year.

    Northampton Saints' Premiership fixture at Worcester Warriors on Saturday, 18 November has been brought forward by two hours and will now kick-off at 13:00.

    The change of time has been made to ensure the match does not clash with the England international with Australia that afternoon.

    Saints start their new campaign against Saracens at Twickenham on 2 September.

    At 03:50 on 31 July 1917, the Third Battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, began when 2,000 Allied guns opened fire on German lines.

    By the end of the three-month long campaign, more than 500,000 men from both sides are thought to have been injured or killed.

    One hundred years on, Passchendaele is still remembered through the war poet Siegfried Sassoon.

    The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde to mark the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele.

    They gathered at the Menin Gate in Ypres for a service which included the Last Post.

  17. Who was Edgar Mobbs?published at 08:28 British Summer Time 31 July 2017

    Before World War One, Edgar Mobbs was one of the Northampton's most recognisable figures, as captain of Northampton Saints RUFC from 1907 to 1913. He also captained England.

    During WW1, Mobbs rose through the ranks to command the 7th Northamptonshire Regiment (known as “The Mobbs Own”).

    He was wounded three times, was mentioned in dispatches twice and received the distinguished service order (DSO) in January 1917.

    On 31 July 1917 he was killed on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele while leading a charge on a machine gun position.
