  1. Wellow travellers site application rejectedpublished at 09:41

We brought you the news last night that controversial plans for a travellers site in the village of Wellow were rejected by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

It was an emotional moment when the vote was taken to refuse the application – by a majority of nine councillors to six.

Villagers from Wellow breathed a collective sigh of relief – and there were even some tears. This decision was over a small site – just eight caravans – but it could have big implications for other councils when considering similar applications. Local authorities are required by law to provide pitches for travellers, but this vote could set a precedent elsewehere.

Wellow already has 43 pitches for travellers within half a mile of the village. The difference here is that the proposed site was in a conservation area. The applicant, William Calladine, looked dismayed when the decision was taken, but declined to be interviewed after the meeting. Pointing to the campaigners, he told me “you can talk to them”.

  2. Why can't hit-and-run driver be prosecuted?published at 09:23 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2016

Here's what Notts Police said about the hit-and-run video that's been posted online that shows a driver accelerating into a cyclist:

    • The investigating officer established the car was a hire vehicle that had been sub-leased through a number of different companies
    • The officer traced a man and a woman who were eligible to drive the car, so could have been driving on that day. The man and woman were issued with a formal request to provide the driver's details, but did not respond
    • They were interviewed and summonsed to court for failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident and failing to respond to a legal request for driver details
    • The evidence was then reviewed by the Crown Prosecution Service and a decision was made that there was not enough to prove who was driving the vehicle at the moment of the collision
    • As a result, the prosecution for failing to stop and failing to report was discontinued.

More on this dramatic video that's emerged showing a cyclist knocked off his bike in a hit and run in Nottingham.

The incident happened just outside the BBC offices in November 2014 but has been posted online by the cyclist.

"To this day I have no idea why the driver did this to me, there was no confrontation with any driver prior to the attack, I do not know the driver or the car," he said.

A 52-year-old man, from Nottingham, received six penalty points and a £150 fine for failing to provide driver details  - but can't be prosecuted for the hit and run.

But incredibly - police say there's not enough evidence to prosecute because they cannot prove who was driving.

Instead, a man who was eligible to drive the car has been fined £150 for failing to provide driver details.
