We brought you the news last night that controversial plans for a travellers site in the village of Wellow were rejected by Newark and Sherwood District Council.
It was an emotional moment when the vote was taken to refuse the application – by a majority of nine councillors to six.

Villagers from Wellow breathed a collective sigh of relief – and there were even some tears. This decision was over a small site – just eight caravans – but it could have big implications for other councils when considering similar applications. Local authorities are required by law to provide pitches for travellers, but this vote could set a precedent elsewehere.
Wellow already has 43 pitches for travellers within half a mile of the village. The difference here is that the proposed site was in a conservation area. The applicant, William Calladine, looked dismayed when the decision was taken, but declined to be interviewed after the meeting. Pointing to the campaigners, he told me “you can talk to them”.
