  5. What needs to be done to tackle dog fighting?published at 08:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    BBC Local Live

The RSPCA is responsible for investigating and prosecuting dog fighting.

The maximum penalty is six months' imprisonment, an unlimited fine or both - but is that enough?

The charity wants to see a further review of sentencing under the Animal Welfare Act to allow magistrates to give stronger sentences to those guilty of the worst offences.

That call is being echoed by the League Against Cruel Sports, the Dogs Trust, and the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC).

  6. What is dog fighting?published at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

Dog fighting was made illegal in 1835 - two years before Queen Victoria took to the throne - yet it's still going on.

Dogs are trained to fight and pitted against each other. There's also been a rise in so-called "casual" dog fighting with the animals being made to fight in public places, while it's filmed on mobile phones.

After bouts many dogs are left with horrific injuries but, rather than taking them to a vet, dog fighters will often perform crude surgeries without anaesthetic, often using staple guns or super glue to close up wounds, the RSPCA said.

Most dogs used for fighting will ultimately either be killed in the ring, die as a result of their injuries or in some cases be killed by their owners.

  9. High number of dog fights in Nottspublished at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

It's hard to believe that the barbaric so-called sport of dog fighting is still going on in this country, 180 years after it was banned.

It's equally hard to believe Nottinghamshire has one of the highest rates in the country, figures released to the BBC have revealed.

    dog

Nearly 5,000 calls about organised dog fighting in England and Wales have been made to the RSPCA since 2006.

In Nottinghamshire, there have been 148 reports of dog fights - that's the sixth highest behind areas like London and the West Midlands.

A supermarket worker accused of trying to join a terrorist group watched so-called Islamic State videos to learn more about propaganda, a court has heard.

Ryan Counsell, 28, a Muslim convert from Nottingham, denies four charges, including having possession of an al-Qaeda bomb-making guide.

Woolwich Crown Court was told he downloaded the videos because of a "business interest".

He said he wanted to "tastefully edit" and provide written analysis on his online "catalogue of propaganda". The trial continues.
