There has been a rise in the number of people complaining about their credit rating, according to BBC Inside Out.
There were 600 new disputes raised with the Financial Ombudsman - double that of last year.
Nottingham-based Experian, which holds data on millions of people, says mistakes are rare and it has support available to those who need it.
Dan Reilly says a mistaken black mark on his credit rating almost cost him his mortgage which he said came as a complete surprise.
But James Jones from Experian said a support team was available to put things right.
He said: "There are loads of protections in place already, I think for me the challenge is public awareness because if you don't know what your rights are then obviously you are not going to be asking the right questions.
"Mistakes are incredibly rare but they can happen."
