Campaigners are hoping to persuade rail bosses to reintroduce a direct rail service between Leicester and Coventry.

    West Midlands Trains

Currently passengers have to change at Nuneaton, but Midlands Connect, a regional transport partnership, believes a direct route could be launched by building a tunnel in the Warwickshire town.

Simon Statham, from the group, said the project would cost around £50m and would cut the rail journey time between the two cities to 40 minutes.

He said if funding is approved the link could be up and running by, "the early to mid 2020s".

"However, the funding isn't in place, so our job at Midlands Connect is to really sell the case to government," he said.

The £5.4m project will by taken on by Heckler and Koch, which runs the Nottingham Small Arms Factory in Lenton.

The MoD said the move to arm soldiers with the SA80 A3, rather than the current A2 model, will ensure it can remain in use until at least 2025.

Defence minister Guto Bebb said: "This investment is also a boost to Nottingham's highly-skilled gun-makers who proudly support our troops in their task to protect our country in the face of intensifying threats."

A new book about Beaumanor Hall has been published this week, throwing light on the years there between 1915-1939.

The author, Caroline Wessell, focuses on the effect World War One had on the hall's owner, William Curzon Herrick and those living and working on the estate. In the 1920s and 30s the hall was the scene of lavish house parties attended by film stars such as David Niven, politicians and members of the aristocracy.
