Campaigners are hoping to persuade rail bosses to reintroduce a direct rail service between Leicester and Coventry.
Currently passengers have to change at Nuneaton, but Midlands Connect, a regional transport partnership, believes a direct route could be launched by building a tunnel in the Warwickshire town.
Simon Statham, from the group, said the project would cost around £50m and would cut the rail journey time between the two cities to 40 minutes.
He said if funding is approved the link could be up and running by, "the early to mid 2020s".
"However, the funding isn't in place, so our job at Midlands Connect is to really sell the case to government," he said.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said around 20 jobs have been secured in Nottingham after a decision to upgrade rifles used by British troops.
The £5.4m project will by taken on by Heckler and Koch, which runs the Nottingham Small Arms Factory in Lenton.
The MoD said the move to arm soldiers with the SA80 A3, rather than the current A2 model, will ensure it can remain in use until at least 2025.
Defence minister Guto Bebb said: "This investment is also a boost to Nottingham's highly-skilled gun-makers who proudly support our troops in their task to protect our country in the face of intensifying threats."

A recently-launched West End play, Quiz, tells the story of Charles Ingram, the man at the centre of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire coughing scandal of 2001.
Ingram, a former British Army major from Shardlow, was accused of cheating his way to the jackpot on the ITV show by conspiring with his wife, Diana, and another contestant, who would apparently cough when the correct answer was mentioned.
In the stage production, by James Graham, audiences can decide the major's guilt for themselves by voting via a keypad at the end of both the first and second halves.

Police are looking for a teenager in connection with an attack on a man who was threatened with a knife in his home.
Derbyshire Police said the attacker, believed to either 17 or 18, entered the property on Hillcrest Drive, in Kilburn, on Tuesday 3 April.
He took out a knife and demanded money from two men inside, before punching one of them in the face.
Det Con Richard Marshall said: "There’s a good chance this boy is local to the area and could well have been with a group."

A new book about Beaumanor Hall has been published this week, throwing light on the years there between 1915-1939.
The author, Caroline Wessell, focuses on the effect World War One had on the hall's owner, William Curzon Herrick and those living and working on the estate. In the 1920s and 30s the hall was the scene of lavish house parties attended by film stars such as David Niven, politicians and members of the aristocracy.
Caroline says the book was inspired by a collection of letters found between the owner of the hall and his chauffeur, Sam Preston.

Jeremy Corbyn will be in Derby later to announce that a Labour government would give under-25s in England free bus travel.
Mr Corbyn will say the policy would come into effect in areas where local councils bring services back into public ownership.
Labour said the £1.4bn scheme would be paid for by cash from vehicle excise duty currently earmarked for road improvements.
But the Conservatives said it was "another promise from Labour that they have no real ability to deliver".

Repairs to Nottingham railway station will be complete by July, according to Network Rail.
The announcement comes three months to the day since a fire destroyed part of the building.
Detectives investigating the blaze believe it was started deliberately but nobody has been prosecuted.
A 33-year-old woman was arrested in February on suspicion of arson, but was released under investigation.
British Transport Police said water and heat from the fire damaged a lot of evidence. The force is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
