They claim the rent asked of them has been continuously increasing and they no longer feel welcome in the building.

Elaine told the BBC: "I feel terrible. I feel that I'm letting the children and families of this community down. It's not what we wanted to do but I don't feel like we have any alternatives."

The chairman of Mountsorrel Parish Council said he was not aware of the decision to close the nursery.

Steve Haywood said some conditions over their use of the centre were due to be finalised next month and that it would have been easier to sort out had the couple approached the parish council directly.

Speaking in the Commons Julian Lewis said speeding cyclists in his constituency of New Forest East were putting residents at risk because they "can't be bothered" to fit a bell on their bikes to warn pedestrians of their approach.

Councillor Lucy Care has said forcing cyclists to have bells won't reduce the number of collisions with pedestrians. She believes speaking is often a more effective way of communicating.

Currently the Highway Code only recommends that a bell is fitted to a bike.
