    One of Nottingham's greatest success stories is the focus of a new TV drama.

    Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's tale from humble beginnings in Nottingham to medal-winning successes at the OIympics will feature in a two-hour film on ITV.

    It's written by Southwell-born Billy Ivory (below), whose repertoire includes Made in Dagenham and Common as Muck.

    Game of Thrones actor Will Tudor will play Dean, while Ackley Bridge star Poppy Lee Friar will play Torvill.

    It also stars Anita Dobson, Stephen Tompkinson and Jo Hartley in supporting roles.

    The ice dancing duo, who won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics, spent hours being interviewed by Ivory.

    They said they were "honoured" to share their "passion for skating, the life-long friendship that came through our sport and everything that it took to achieve our eventual goal of becoming Olympic champions".

    Filming starts in the next few days, according to the Press Association.

    Leicester Riders have announced they have re-signed Rema Lascelles for a second season.

    The Brit averaged over 16 minutes a game as back-up point guard, and helped the Riders pick up three trophies in his first season at the club.

    Police have asked for the public's help, external in identifying a man who was found dead in Leicester earlier this month.

    The man's body was discovered in Braunstone Lane East on 11 July but officers have been unable to establish who he was.

    The force has now released an artist impression of the man along with a photo of a distinctive tattoo on his arm. Police added his death was not being treated as suspicious.

    Burglars have caused tens of thousands of pounds of damage after a ram raid at a garden centre in Nottinghamshire.

    A forklift truck, stolen from a farm building next door to the Cherry Lane centre in Bradmore, was used to break in to the office building in the early hours of Sunday.

    Andy Jermy from QD Stores, which owns the garden centre, said a safe was taken as well as two or three days' takings from the till.

    He said the building, which was less than 18 months old, will cost about £30,000 to repair.

    Three masked burglars were seen on CCTV.

    The forklift and a small 4x4 vehicle, also stolen from the farm, were later recovered, according to Nottinghamshire Police.

    A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder after a 27-year-old man was stabbed to death at a house in Chellaston.

    The man died at the scene after police and paramedics were called to a property in Leveret Close on Saturday night.

    Marcin Woznicki, of St Clare's Close, Derby, was additionally charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

    He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court this morning.

    A motorcyclist has been killed in a crash in Gamston, external.

    Police said the 57-year-old man died at the scene after his bike and a car colllided on the A52 Gamston Lings Bar Road at about 17:00 yesterday.

    The road was closed near the junction with Tollerton Road while emergency services dealt with the crash.

    Nobody else was injured. Police have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage.

  10. Donington Park named 'top service station in East Mids'published at 09:37 British Summer Time 24 July 2018

    Donington Park has been rated as the best service station in the East Midlands in a new survey.

    It received a satisfaction rating of 97% among those surveyed by independent travel watchdog Transport Focus, external.

    Norton Canes, on the M6 in Staffordshire, was rated as the best in the country with a 100% satisfaction rating, while Thurrock (M25 in Essex) was bottom of the pile with a lowly 68%.

    In compiling the list, Transport Focus questioned 9,600 customers on key factors including staffing, food and toilet facilities.

    Three people have been arrested and crack cocaine, cocaine, cannabis and mamba have been seized as part of the latest police crack-down on drugs in Nottingham city centre, external.

    Police used sniffer dogs during Saturday night's action, which saw six people handed dispersal orders compelling them to leave the centre.

    A total of 22 people were spoken to and 17 were stopped and searched.

    Derbyshire Cricket Club says it hopes other big names will now come to the city after the success of the sell-out Little Mix concert.

    The club says more than 16,000 people saw the girl band last week, making it the biggest concert held at the County Ground so far.

    Commercial director Ryan Duckett told BBC Radio Derby the club had already started exploring options for next summer but wouldn't reveal any names.

    A former British heavyweight boxing champion from Swadlincote is to have a street named after him in his home town.

    Jack Bodell became a household name in the 1970s and trained with Muhammad Ali.

    He died in 2016 and was honoured with an exhibition in the town.

    Now a new 14-home development that's been built there is being named Bodell Close. A ceremony to unveil the street name is due to take place this afternoon.

    Vineyard owners in the East Midlands are reporting a bumper crop of grapes this year due to the warm and dry weather.

    About 4% of the UK's wine is produced in the East Midlands and since 2009, the number of vineyards in the region has doubled.

    David Bates, who owns a vineyard in Marston Trussell, Leicestershire, said with just over two months to go until he begins harvesting, he predicts he'll produce double the amount of wine he did last year.

    He said: "It's going wonderfully. Last year we made about 1,800 bottles. In 2006, which was a similar year to this, we made 5,000.

    "That's the difference a good summer will make. That's what we're hoping for."

    The government has rejected calls by Mansfield MP Ben Bradley to reclassify mamba as a class A drug.

    The Conservative member told the House of Commons the synthetic cannibinoid was "destroying lives" in his constituency, with around 20 addicts in Mansfield town centre.

    Policing Minister Nick Hurd said mamba would remain a class B drug for the time being but added the matter was always kept under review.
