    A charity shop in Leicestershire has discovered an envelope containing letters sent to a prisoner of war held in Thailand during World War Two.

    The correspondence was found tucked inside a set of curtains donated to the LOROS hospice shop in Glenfield.

    The unspoiled envelope is dated 20 January 1944 and the handwritten letters were signed by a woman called Dolly Lowe from Cuddington, a rural village in Cheshire, to a British POW named Billy.

    Sarah Forryan, from LOROS said: “What a wonderful find. They’ve been so well preserved, and Dolly’s writing is really clear. Wouldn’t it be lovely to find the descendants of the couple to be able to give the letters back to the family to keep as a lasting memento?

    “We have an address for where Dolly once lived, so if anyone believes they have a family link, we’d love to hear from you.”

    A Nottinghamshire-based energy supplier has ceased trading, energy market regulator Ofgem has said.

    The energy supply of Iresa's 100,000 customers will continue as normal and their outstanding credit balances are protected under Ofgem's safety net, the regulator said.

    Ofgem will choose a new supplier to take on Iresa's customers, which will contact them individually when this process is complete, Reuters reports.

    A message on the Beeston-based supplier's website said, external: "Customers need not worry, their supplies are secure and credit balances are protected.

    "Ofgem's advice is not to switch, but to sit tight and wait until the new supplier has been appointed."

    The electriciy and gas supplier had been dogged by complaints about customer service and was warned earlier this year to make improvements or risk being shut down.

    Firefighters are still at the scene of a house fire in Langold, caused by a lightning strike.

    Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue have praised the occupants, external of the house for closing the door of the room where the fire started, which helped to stop it spreading.

    Previously they said the first floor of the property was "well alight" after the blaze started at about 08:40.

    Everyone in the house in Cross Street has got out safely, they tweeted.

    Police have named a 27-year-old man who was stabbed to death at a house in Chellaston, external.

    Mateusz Woznicki was found injured in Leveret Close on Saturday night and died at the scene.

    His 22-year-old brother, Marcin Woznicki, of St Clare's Close in Derby, has been remanded in custody, charged with his murder and is due to appear in court later.

    A man was taken to hospital after allegedly having liquid thrown in his face, external when his phone was stolen by two boys in Swadlincote.

    Police said the 30-year-old was approached in Frank Bodicote Way by two boys on bikes who appeared to be aged about 16.

    One took his phone and the other threw liquid in his face - prompting a precautionary trip to hospital where the liquid was found to not be dangerous enough to cause serious injury.

    Police have not said what the liquid was but have appealed for witnesses to the incident, which happened at about 21:30 on Monday 9 July.

    Det Con Sean Pett said: "It is, of course, a relief that the liquid used wasn’t dangerous enough to cause a serious injury.

    "However, this type of incident is preying on people’s fear of that type of crime. It must have been a terrifying experience for the victim – and all, it appears, for a mobile phone."

    Despite this, Highways England has warned there are still delays in the area.

    The prison service has revealed 27 inmates absconded from Sudbury open prison in Derbyshire in the 12 months to the end of March, up from 17 for the previous 12 months and the highest of any open prison in the country.

    The figures were released as part of an annual report into the state of our prisons.

    The report also revealed six Sudbury absconders had yet to be tracked down by the end of April - again the highest number in the country.

    Organisers of the Y Not Festival have reversed their ban on gazebos at this year's event.

    Music fans heading for the festival had expressed anger after the portable covers appeared on a list of items people were not allowed to bring to the Pikehall site.

    Event bosses said the gazebos took up too much space in the camping area but the decision had been branded "dangerous" by some due to the current heatwave.

    Now the festival has said gazebos can be brought along as long as campers are "mindful of space and each other".

    This year there is a drugs testing facility at the festival for the first time. There, drugs can be tested for other intoxicants, psychoactive substances and chemicals.

    The bright colours are the downpours and the grey areas are completely dry - so you can have heavy rain in one area and then it's absolutely bone dry a mile or so away.

    A number of homes and properties in and around Blenheim Drive in Allestree are without water this morning due to a burst water pipe, external.

    A man has been taken to hospital with a gunshot wound in his leg after a shooting in the St Ann's area of Nottingham.

    Police were called to Lotus Close at about 17:00 yesterday - the road was closed while police investigated.

    The man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

    There was a disturbance at Lowdham Grange prison in Nottinghamshire last night.

    Serco, which runs it, has confirmed a handful of prisoners were involved in what's been described as an incident of "concerted indiscipline".

    The firm said the incident was contained within one wing and it was unaware of any injuries.
