Plans have been submitted for a stone sculpture in Somerby dedicated to a parachute regiment involved in an infamous World War Two battle.
Friends of the Tenth, a charity set up to commemorate the 10th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, wants to install the stone in memory of those who died and educate future generations about the men.
If Melton Borough Council approves the plans, the sculpture will be crafted by Coleorton-based sculptor Graeme Mitcheson in the village's green.
The 10th Battalion had been stationed in and around Somerby in the lead-up to their parachute drop 64 miles behind enemy lines in Holland.
Some 582 men left Somerby on the fateful mission, but only 36 survivors returned there two weeks later following the end of the Battle of Arnhem. The mission was later dramatised in Richard Attenborough's film A Bridge Too Far.
The charity has a fundraising target of £75,000 and has so far raised nearly £30,000.
