Plans have been submitted for a stone sculpture in Somerby dedicated to a parachute regiment involved in an infamous World War Two battle.

Friends of the Tenth, a charity set up to commemorate the 10th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, wants to install the stone in memory of those who died and educate future generations about the men.

If Melton Borough Council approves the plans, the sculpture will be crafted by Coleorton-based sculptor Graeme Mitcheson in the village's green.

The 10th Battalion had been stationed in and around Somerby in the lead-up to their parachute drop 64 miles behind enemy lines in Holland.

Some 582 men left Somerby on the fateful mission, but only 36 survivors returned there two weeks later following the end of the Battle of Arnhem. The mission was later dramatised in Richard Attenborough's film A Bridge Too Far.

The charity has a fundraising target of £75,000 and has so far raised nearly £30,000.

Boss Peter Simpson said the money would be used to ensure supplies despite the likelihood of lower levels of rainfall in the future.

"This summer's heat wave was the kind of extreme weather challenge we'll see more of in the future, he said.

The firm said customers would see price rises of less than 1%.

Leicestershire will see £32m of investment, while Rutland, where the reservoir is run by the firm, will receive £51m.

Nottinghamshire will get a share of £30m. Only a small part of the county is covered by Anglian Water.

  8. Plans for thousands of new student homespublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

Thousands of new student flats have been built in Nottingham in the last few years, with thousands more on the way.

They will accommodate some of the city's 65,000 students who head to the two universities every year.

The city council, which is responsible for planning permission, said despite the belief there are too many student flats in the city, there is still huge demand.

    Quote Message

Our position has been to encourage purpose-built student accommodation in the city centre where other residents might not choose to live but students want to be. We can see that this is reducing the concentration of students in some parts of the city and frees up housing that's arguably better suited for families and other residents."

Other developments are on Talbot Street, Station Street, Huntingdon Street, Summer Leys Lane, Canning Circus, Glasshouse Street and Castle Wharf.

A further 191 flats are planned outside of the city in Southwell for students on the Nottingham Trent's Brackenhurst Campus.
