  14. Saturns rings could disappear (in 100m years)published at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Nick Smith
    BBC News Online

Research by University of Leicester academics suggest that Saturns rings could disappear in the next 100 million years, as gravity pulls them in.

Dr Tom Stallard, associate professor in planetary astronomy at the University of Leicester and Dr James O'Donoghue, who studied for his PhD at the University of Leicester, have found that Saturn’s rings are dying at the maximum rate estimated from data collected by space probes Voyager 1 and 2 in the 1980s.

Dr O’Donoghue, who works at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said: "We estimate that this ‘ring rain’ drains the equivalent of an Olympic-sized swimming pool from Saturn’s rings in half an hour.

"The entire ring system will be gone in 300 million years.

"Add to this the Cassini-spacecraft detected ring-material falling into Saturn’s equator, and the rings have less than 100 million years to live."

The documents, uncovered by a Nottingham academic, show she received a response from the Postmaster General, which was dated 6 February 1934.
