    Nottingham Panthers fell to a 3-1 loss at home to midlands rivals Coventry Blaze yesterday evening.

    The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the third through Justin Kovacs, but the visitors scored three late goals to take the win.

    The loss leaves the Panthers fourth in the Elite League.

  2. Soubry: 'I'm not trying to stop Brexit'published at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

    Anna Soubry, MP for Nottingham has said she is not trying to stop Brexit, but that it should be decided by a People's Vote.

    Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham this morning, Ms Soubry said: "I have voted for us to leave the EU, to trigger Article 50.

    "I voted for the Withdrawal Act, I’m not trying to stop Brexit.

    "I just say now we know what Brexit looks like, I think it should go back to the people and we should have a People’s Vote."

    Ms Soubry was one of three MPs who resigned from the Conservative Party yesterday morning, along with South Cambridgeshire's Heidi Allen and Totnes' Sarah Wollaston.

    A senior Conservative in Broxtowe says Anna Soubry should resign as MP and trigger a by-election after quitting the party for Parliament's new Independent Group.

    Councillor Philip Owen said: "This group of people, former Labour and former Conservatives, are all very much in favour of a People's Vote.

    "I say let's have a people's vote in Broxtowe and let's have a by-election."

    Mr Owen's comments come as it's claimed more Tory and Labour MPs could also be on the verge of leaving.

    Ms Soubry has rejected the idea of resigning outright.

    Figures compiled by The Taxpayers' Alliance show that Derbyshire County Council spent more on award ceremonies than any other authority.

    The council spent £218,000 on the ceremonies over the last three years, 12 times the national average and more than every authority in Wales combined.

    A council spokeswoman said the figures related to staff long service awards, with the council now spending "less than half what has been reported".

  6. Twitter appeal helps transcribe WW1 diarypublished at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

    A diary, written in shorthand in 1915, has been deciphered thanks to the help of a stranger on Twitter.

    The diary belonged to Amy Abethell's great-great uncle Stanley Hooker, from Hull, who died aged 18 in World War One.

    Ms Abethell, from Nottingham, found the book earlier this month and appealed for someone to translate it.

    She said a former shorthand teacher had contacted her and was helping to transcribe the pages.

    She added the transcribed words had helped make Stanley "real".

    Derby County's play-off hopes were dealt a blow last night, with a 1-0 home defeat against Millwall.

    Wallace scored the only goal on the counter-attack on 71 minutes, the first shot on target for either side in a drab match at Pride Park.

    A swift break after a poor Rams free-kick saw Shane Ferguson release Wallace, who scored with a fine left-footed shot from the edge of the box.

    Derby remain two points outside the play-off spots but have now played a game more than sixth placed Bristol City.

    Council tax increases were approved yesterday, affecting every rate payer in Leicestershire.

    Leicester City Council voted for a rise of just under 3%, while Leicestershire County Council approved an increase of just under 4%.
