  2. Project to restore D-Day planepublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 1 April 2019

    BBC Radio Leicester

A huge restoration project to get a World War Two plane used in the D-Day landings flying by the end of the year is under way.

Charlie Walker is trying to make a US Air Force's Dakota air worthy again. It was based at Bottesford ahead of the Normandy landings and is now in a hanger in Coventry.

    C-47 planes

Mr Walker said: "To the untrained eye it does look like a bit of a shell. But you've got to imagine the amount of work we've done to this aircraft to get it to this stage.

"It arrived here at Coventry just over 18 months ago in three or four sea freight containers and it was just a pile of bits - now it's standing on its own wheels, it's got two engines on.

"We've got a lot of work to do inside to restore it back to original wartime configuration but this aircraft will be flying by the end of the year and we can't wait."

Mr Walker added that all the DC-3/C-47 Dakota, that came over from the USA treated Bottesford as a sort of "staging post" before they were assigned to a squadron.

The planes were used to transport paratroopers to France as part of D-Day in 1944 and were dubbed "the aircraft that helped win the war" by Allied commander General Eisenhower.

We really want to locate this man to ensure he is safe and well. It could have simply been a case of a man looking over the bridge, but his demeanour caused some motorists to call us to report him being there."
