A life-long Notts County fan said he has been "overwhelmed" with support after receiving racist messages online.
An anonymous account made racist remarks to Brandon Chambers, 24, after he tweeted support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Mr Chambers, from Nottingham, said he cried when he first saw the messages.
"I know racism is around but it's closer to home than you think," he told the BBC. "Whoever posted this needs to understand the words you say hurt people."
But since it happened, on Tuesday, he said about 400 people have written messages of support, including current and former Notts County players.

Rolls-Royce workers and supporters have gathered outside of Derby's Council House to protest against planned job cuts.
The Derby-based firm is offering voluntary redundancy for about 1,500 people this year and a similar number in 2021.
Furloughed machinist Robert Tunnicliffe said he is worried about the impact the move will have on his and other families.
He said: "I love my job - it's a great company to work for. It's disappointing what we're going through.
"[Rolls-Royce] are rushing it through and it's only because of the unions that they're putting the brakes on and we've got a bit of breathing time.
"Six months ago was brilliant, we were meeting targets, everybody was happy."
Prof Cecile Wright, chair of Derby Supports Rolls Royce Workers, said: "It is shocking because of the implications, not only for the workers who are going to lose their jobs also for the companies that rely on Rolls-Royce.
"If this is the first tranche of cuts to come along the way, my goodness what is going to happen to the city of Derby?"
Rolls-Royce has said the effect of the coronavirus pandemic has had on the aviation industry is forcing the job losses.

A black police officer from Leicestershire has expressed his anger over the death of George Floyd in the US.
Mr Floyd, an African-American, died in Minneapolis on 25 May when a white police officer continued to kneel on his neck after he pleaded he could not breathe.
The death, which was captured on video, has caused outrage and sparked a wave of protests in cities across the world.
Four police officers have been charged over Mr Floyd's death, including Derek Chauvin, who faces a second-degree murder charge.
Mel Thomas, of Leicestershire Police, told BBC Radio Leicester: "Those police officers took an oath, the same oath as me, to serve and protect - and that means protecting the people we actually detain.
"I couldn't even watch the footage until the end, I was that upset by it. It's just appalling."
"I can speak for the force. We're absolutely appalled, horrified and disgusted by the way George Floyd lost his life," he added.
He urged anyone experiencing racism to report it, whether it happens at school, work or on the street.
Kully Singh Sidki says he developed sepsis and lost two-and-a-half stone while battling the virus.
