  5. NHS staff concerned over missed vaccination appointmentspublished at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2021

    Rob Sissons
    East Midlands Today Reporter

The jab programme is being expanded, with even more vaccination sites opening across the East Midlands.

It’s the introduction of the seven big centres across England which has baffled some people, with our nearest being Birmingham.

Some people, aged 80 and over, have been given the chance to go for a vaccination at the Birmingham site, but only if they live a 45-minute drive away.

The NHS do say it is a choice to go there and if you are willing to wait, you will get the chance to get a jab at a place closer to you in due course.

The biggest concern has been the number of people missing appointments.

One clinic in Ashbourne had 11 people miss their slots. The vaccine can only be stored for so long, so staff ended up staying late to call people in and make sure it wasn’t wasted.

Councils in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have said they hope to begin rapid asymptomatic testing in selected areas from later this month.

Nottinghamshire County Councli plans to start its pilot in Mansfield on 25 January and in Worksop from early February, testing people once a week over three months.

This type of testing began in Lambeth, London, earlier this month and the government said it will now roll out across England this week.

Jonathan Gribbin, Nottinghamshire's director of public health, said the places they would target first are the Bellamy Road, Ladybrook and Oak Tree areas of Mansfield and the Manton and Sandy Lane areas of Worksop.

"We have identified these communities because they have a high proportion of working-age residents and those who are unable to work from home," he said.

"We want to make sure that they have easy access to testing and support if they need to self-isolate."

Nottingham City Council said it had selected the Forest Fields and Hyson Green areas of the city for an asymptomatic community testing facility, due to open over the next couple of weeks.

Sally Longford, the council's deputy leader, said: “We know there have been high rates of Covid-19 infections in these areas and that citizens living here are of working age and more at risk from Covid-19.

"Many individuals living in Forest Fields and Hyson Green may also find it difficult to access testing, so the chosen site is close to transport routes that serve these communities."

She added the facility would be in place until March.

A Nottingham care home worker who stole a vulnerable 83-year-old's bank card and and used it to buy fuel has been sentenced.

Nottinghamshire Police said Tyra Banton, 20, of Penrhyn Close, St Ann’s, used the card more than 12 times at petrol stations in August last year and stole more than £300.

The force said the victim, who has now passed away, noticed his card had been taken while shopping and was reported stolen by his son.

Officers arrested Banton after a search at her house found clothing which matched that worn by her in a forecourt CCTV recording (pictured).

"This was a very sad case which saw a highly vulnerable man lose money. It left him upset and it took time for him to get over the whole ordeal," Said PC Sharoon.

"The man had suffered with a stroke previously, was wheelchair-bound and had one arm. He also had difficulty communicating due to his health.

"Banton exploited this. She was in a position of trust, but was willing to defraud the victim on several occasions for her own personal gain."
