    Message from a Nottinghamshire Conservative expressing real concern they could lose Newark & Sherwood District Council.

    They went into the election with a comfortable looking 29 out of 39 seats.

    A declaration is expected early afternoon.

    Ashfield Independents have increased their majority to keep hold of Ashfield District Council.

    They won 32 of a possible 35 seats - with the Conservatives and Labour both losing one each, now having only two and one seat respectively.

    Votes were counted overnight at the new Kirkby Leisure Centre. Candidates contested 23 council wards.

    In the 2019 election, the Ashfield Independents won 30 out of a possible 35 seats and secured overall majority control of the council.

    The group had taken over the council a year earlier, when a vote of no confidence ousted the previous Labour administration.

    Bolsover District Council in Derbyshire will remain a Labour-led authority after the party made strong gains, taking an extra 13 seats - mainly at the cost of independent councillors.

    They now have 31 seats compared to the Tories' three. The Lib Dems lost their only seat.

    Little change here, where the Lib Dems have gained one seat, leaving them firmly in control with 22 seats to the Conservatives' 10. Labour have two seats.

    The borough council was predicted to be hotly contested between the local Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups.

    For the past 20 years, control has swung between them, with the Lib Dems taking it back from the Tories at the last election.

    In Nottinghamshire, Labour have successfully held Bassetlaw , gaining one seat to give them a total of 38 out of 48 on the council.

    The Conservatives gained four, and now have eight seats. The Lib Dems lost their only seat.

    All 38 seats on the district council had been up for grabs.

    Going into the election the Conservative Party held a strong majority having won 22 of the 38 seats at the last election in 2019.
