  5. Surreal atmosphere in cordoned-off city centrepublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 13 June 2023

It's such a strange situation to be in Nottingham city centre, in the blazing hot sunshine, without seeing anyone currently heading out to go for a drink or head to the theatre.

All of the roads around here are cordoned off and I can see a specialist police officer in full forensic gear - because this is still an active crime scene.

In fact the cordon has been extended, there are places I could walk this morning that I can no longer do so.

It feels like there are more police here than when I arrived here at nine o'clock this morning.

  15. What do we know about the suspect?published at 15:21 British Summer Time 13 June 2023

Honestly, not very much at the moment. With this being a live investigation, police have to be careful with how many details they give out and when. For now, though, here's what we know.

The suspect is a man, aged 31. We don't know if he's from or lives in Nottingham.

Following a report by BBC News' home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford, we know that the attacker, who remains in police custody, may have some mental health issues.

As things stand, his motive remains unknown. Counter-terrorism police are assisting with the investigation - and police say they are "keeping an open mind" as they establish the facts.

As soon as we know more, we'll let you know.

Who were the officers in burgundy?published at 14:50 British Summer Time 13 June 2023

    NILO officers

The sight of distinctively dressed officers apparently from an organisation called NILO fuelled speculation that something was seriously wrong in Nottingham.

But the officers in burgundy overalls and protective gear are not - as some people theorised on social media – a bomb disposal team or special forces. The most visible among them wears a NILO patch, meaning he is the National Inter-Agency Liaison Officer – a highly-trained member of the emergency services who ensures that police, fire, ambulance, and other agencies work together during a crisis.

The others are almost certainly members of the fire and rescue service, wearing ballistic vests which would allow them to operate in the so-called “red zone”.

In order to become NILO qualified, fire officers must already have experience as incident commanders. According to the Fire Service College, NILO officers coordinate the response to “various terrorist and other malicious attacks, natural hazards, major accidents and other incidents”.

Developed by the London Fire Service in 2001 but now rolled out nationally, the NILO doesn’t take charge of an incident, but offers advice and experience to ensure the safety of emergency responders and the general public.

"And they dragged him out of the car and he just fell on the floor. He was still pretty wrestling at the point.

"They dragged him away and that was about it."

Asked what the police shouted, she said: "Get out of the car and get on the floor."
