    A crowdfunding campaign has been launched after floodwater has caused "tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage" to a Shropshire showground.

    The floods "have caused damage and devastation not seen in decades" to the Shrewsbury showground, the Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society said, external.

    The charity said every building on the site has been flooded, with the toilet systems filled with river silt and charity shop "ruined".

    The showground is used for a variety of events including the Shrewsbury Folk Festival and Shropshire County Show.

    "The showground is not insured against flood damage due to its riverside location, and the society charity simply does not have the funds available to make the necessary repairs which are urgently required," it added.

    A Herefordshire MP has said "not enough" is being done to help a village affected by the partial collapse of a road.

    The B4424 has been closed betweek Fownhope and Hereford since 17 February due to a landslip, causing major delays in the area.

    Conservative MP for North Hertfordshire Bill Wiggin said the government was "very willing" to help the local council with funds to repair the road, calling the local council's response to the closure "abysmal".

    John Harrington Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for infrastructure and transport said the council "had not failed to do any work".

    "We have been working since we were able to get to roads that were flooded," he added.

    "We're allowed to clear up, not necessarily recover, and that is the difference - that is what we're trying to get clarity for from central government and from [Mr Wiggin]."

    A woman had to be rescued from the water in Shrewsbury on Sunday, the fire service said. , external

    Crews were called to Castle Bridge on Dorset Street at about 21:50.

    She was treated by staff before being taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment, the ambulance service added.

    Charities are offering support to residents and businesses affected by flooding.

    Clare Bowland from Amurt UK said it's working with communities affected by the disaster.

    "We see a need here for people to have this sort of support," she said.

    "We're starting with offering help of cleaning up - that's where our offer is at this stage."

    A predicted peak of the river is expected on Tuesday evening, said the Environment Agency.

    The River Severn peaked in Shrewsbury overnight at Welsh Bridge at 4.3m.

    The levels are almost a metre lower than last week, "so more manageable," said the Environment Agency.

    "But we don’t want people to get complacent, these are still very high flood levels," EA area manager Dave Throup said.

    Flood defences in Ironbridge were reinforced over the weekend after rising levels last week caused them to buckle.

    "We’ve replaced the bits that got damaged or twisted, so they’re all good to go," he added.

    "We’re expecting a peak overnight tonight at Ironbridge probably up to 5.8m, but again that’s a good metre lower than last week, the barriers should be fine.”

    A landslip in Cheshire will affect rail services in and out of Crewe until the end of the day.

    Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services are affected as emergency repairs are carried out. Cancellations and diversions should be expected.

  10. Appeal for help after road shut since mid Februarypublished at 07:38 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Businesses in a Herefordshire village affected by the partial collapse of a road said there has been a drop in customer numbers.

    The B4424 between Fownhope and Hereford has been closed since 17 February after a landslip.

    A coach takes children to St Mary's Primary School in the village, which is accessible via Ledbury and Ross on Wye, a diversion of 90 minutes for those coming in from elsewhere.

    There are 50 businesses based locally and they say they urgently need better signage and managed diversion routes.

    Kevin Braybrook, who runs Bowens Bed and Breakfast, said they've already had cancellations.

    "Maybe for a few weeks, that's fine," he said, "but it if goes on for months and months it really does get very significant - it's appalling.

    "We just need a speedy professional pro-active response about what we're going to do about this road."

    Work went on through the night to clear trash screens to prevent water levels building up in Worcester.

    Environment Agency area manager Dave Throup said there would be more nights like this to come as "this flood isn't over yet".

    Levels on the River Severn are expected to peak in Worcester on Tuesday night but will remain high for the next three to four days, the EA said.

    Flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected to continue, it added.

  12. Flooding: Bewdley Bridge to shut laterpublished at 06:59 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    Eckington Bridge in Worcestershire remains closed, but other roads in the area have now opened.

    There is an unsafe section of the carriageway near to Sabrina Bridge meaning that temporary traffic lights are in operation.

    Bewdley bridge will close at 10:00 for flood defences to be extended, but is open to pedestrians.

  13. Flood warnings remain as river peak expected laterpublished at 06:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2020

    A number of flood warnings remain in place on the length of the River Severn.

    Levels were monitored in Shrewsbury overnight and flood barriers put up in Coleham Head.

    They've now been removed and the road opened.

    The Wharfage in Ironbridge is still closed to traffic and the Riverside car park is shut in Bridgnorth.

    Roads are also being affected in Herefordshire and Worcestershire with flood warnings on the Wye between Hereford and Ross.

    Flood barriers are set to be extended at Beales Corner in Bewdley ahead of a peak of the River Severn there expected tomorrow.

    A landslip in Cheshire means all lines in and out of Crewe are closed today to allow Network Rail to carry out emergency repairs.

    Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services are affected with diversions and cancellations in place.
